How to sell on Etsy without inventory: you have two legitimate routes. Print-on-demand, where your original designs are printed by a production partner such as Printful or Printify only when a customer orders, and digital downloads, where you sell files you created. Both fit Etsy’s “Designed by a seller” category. What you can’t do is resell other people’s products: Etsy’s seller policy says dropshipping and reselling are not allowed, except in specific cases such as craft supplies.
I’ll explain what Etsy’s rules allow, how print-on-demand and digital downloads work, the fees, and the mistakes I’d avoid. Rules first. They’re strict.
What Etsy’s creativity standards allow
Etsy’s creativity standards (updated June 2025) define four categories of items:
| Category | What it covers | No inventory possible? |
|---|---|---|
| Made by a seller | Items you make by hand or with your own tools | No |
| Designed by a seller | Your original designs produced by a third party, or sold as digital downloads | Yes |
| Handpicked by a seller | Vintage items (20+ years old), items from nature, certain collections | No |
| Sourced by a seller | Craft and party supplies, and items personalized with the buyer’s text or image | Sometimes |
The key rule for no-inventory selling: the design must be yours. Full stop. Etsy’s examples allow a buyer-personalized t-shirt printed on demand, but not resold blank items such as plain t-shirts, hats or tumblers.
Route 1: print-on-demand with a production partner
You create the design and list it. A print partner produces and ships each order. You never touch stock.
- Printful says it only charges when a customer orders, with no monthly fees, and syncs products and orders with Etsy automatically.
- Printify says it imports Etsy orders automatically and sends them to production based on your approval settings; it has a free plan and a paid Premium plan with product discounts.
Disclose your partner. Etsy requires sellers to disclose when an item is made by a production partner and to give accurate information about where it ships from. Printful’s own Etsy page reminds sellers of the same rule.
My take: print-on-demand works best with a tight niche and genuinely original designs. Generic slogans on generic shirts compete with thousands of identical shops. When you choose a niche, pick one you could design for every week for a year.
Route 2: digital downloads
Etsy allows original content you created, sold as a digital download: printables, planners, templates, patterns, art files. Not allowed: bundles, scans or PDFs of someone else’s work, or AI prompt bundles. Digital items still carry the normal listing and transaction fees, and Etsy also collects VAT on automatically downloaded digital items in some countries.
Honestly, I think digital downloads have the best margins on Etsy. Each extra sale costs you nothing to fulfill. They also attract copycats, so design quality and brand matter more here than anywhere.
What’s not allowed
- Dropshipping others’ products.
- Reselling ready-made items without craft input, such as blank tumblers.
- Selling others’ designs or scanned work as downloads.
- Hiding production partners from buyers.
Breaking these rules risks listing removal or shop suspension. Don’t build a business on a loophole. It closes.
The fees
Etsy’s fee policy lists a $0.20 listing fee per item (each listing lasts four months and auto-renews) and a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping and gift wrap. Payment processing comes on top. Print partners charge for each product they make, so price to cover their cost, Etsy’s fees and your margin. How I’d start
- Pick a niche where you can make original designs repeatedly. Narrow beats broad.
- Start with one route. In my view: digital downloads if you design well, print-on-demand if you want physical products. Not both at once.
- Order samples of every print-on-demand product before listing. Photograph them yourself, because mockups hide print quality.
- Disclose partners in every relevant listing. Every one.
- Build 20 to 40 listings, then double down on what sells. Cut what doesn’t.
