How many sellers are on Etsy? According to Etsy’s own SEC filings, the Etsy marketplace had 5.7 million active sellers as of June 30, 2026, up 5.9% from 5.4 million a year earlier. Those sellers reach about 87 million active buyers. Etsy counts a seller as active if they’ve had a charge or sale in the last 12 months, and one person can run more than one shop, so the number counts accounts, not people.
I’ll show how the number has changed, why it fell after 2023, who Etsy sellers are, and what I think it means if you’re weighing a shop there. Numbers first. Then judgment.
How many sellers are on Etsy: the numbers
From Etsy’s 10-K and 10-Q filings, Etsy marketplace only:
| Date | Active sellers | Active buyers |
|---|---|---|
| December 31, 2023 | 7.0 million | Not shown here |
| December 31, 2024 | 5.6 million | Not shown here |
| December 31, 2025 | 5.6 million (down 1.5% year over year) | 86.5 million |
| June 30, 2026 | 5.7 million (up 5.9% year over year) | 87.0 million (down 0.4%) |
Gross merchandise sales on the Etsy marketplace were about $10.5 billion in 2025, against $10.9 billion in 2024.
Watch the “9 million” figure. You’ll often see Etsy described as having about 9 million sellers. That was the combined count across Etsy, Reverb and Depop at the end of 2023. The Etsy marketplace alone had 7.0 million. Reverb was sold in June 2025, and Depop is being sold to eBay, so Etsy now reports the Etsy marketplace on its own.
Why the seller count dropped
Etsy’s 2025 annual report says active sellers declined, then stabilized from the second quarter, and attributes this to the anticipated and intentional impact of the seller set-up fee introduced in 2024. In plain terms: a fee to open a shop filtered out many inactive or casual accounts. By mid-2026 the count was growing again.
In my view, that’s good news for serious sellers. Real shops. Less noise. Fewer abandoned shops means less clutter in search, though competition for the buyers who remain is still real.
Who sells on Etsy
From Etsy’s 2024 Seller Census, reported in its annual filing:
- 89% are businesses of one.
- 97% run their businesses from home.
- 80% identify as women.
- 27% live in rural areas.
- 59% sold for the first time on Etsy.
- 51% sell on more than one channel.
That last number matters. Half of Etsy sellers already sell elsewhere, which is one reason our guide to Etsy alternatives for sellers is popular.
How Etsy compares with other marketplaces
Etsy’s filings describe a marketplace built around small, independent makers: most sellers are businesses of one working from home. That’s a different crowd from Amazon, where many sellers are established brands and resellers. When you decide where to sell, I’d weigh:
- Audience: Etsy buyers come looking for handmade, vintage, personalized and unique items.
- Competition: you compete mainly with other small shops, not national brands.
- Fees and tools: Etsy’s fees and search work differently; our guide to Etsy alternatives for sellers compares them.
If your product is a commodity, Etsy is a hard fit. If it’s original, Etsy’s buyers are looking for exactly that.
What the numbers mean for a new seller
- Buyers per seller. About 87 million buyers across 5.7 million sellers is roughly 15 buyers per seller account on average. Averages hide huge variation; a few shops win most sales.
- Competition is about search, not headcount. You compete with the shops that show up for your keywords, not all 5.7 million.
- Quality wins. Etsy search rewards listings shoppers engage with; see how many listings you should have on Etsy and what Etsy SEO is.
Honestly, I’d say the useful number for you isn’t 5.7 million. It’s how many shops sell your product type, and how good their photos are.
