Best Label Printer for Amazon FBA: Labels, Sizes, Models

Table of Contents

The best label printer for Amazon FBA is one that prints both label types Amazon needs: small FNSKU item labels (1 to 2 inches tall, 2 to 3 inches wide) and 4 x 6 inch box labels. Amazon accepts thermal or laser printers and warns against inkjet, which smears. That’s why most sellers pick a 4-inch direct thermal printer such as the Rollo, Zebra ZD421 or MUNBYN 941, which handle both sizes. And since January 1, 2026, Amazon no longer offers prep and item labeling services in the US, so more sellers need their own printer or a prep center.

I’ll cover what labels you need, which printer type to use, and how the common models compare.

The labels Amazon needs

Item (FNSKU) labels. Amazon’s guidance:

  • Size of 1 to 2 inches tall and 2 to 3 inches wide.
  • Black ink on non-reflective paper with adhesive backing.
  • A scannable barcode, the FNSKU number, product title and condition.
  • Cover all other visible barcodes, such as the manufacturer’s UPC.

Amazon recommends removable adhesive labels for customers’ convenience. Your account uses the manufacturer barcode by default; you switch to Amazon barcodes when you need FNSKU labels, for example to keep your units separate from other sellers’.

Box ID labels. Amazon’s shipment label guide supports labels at least 3 1/3 x 4 inches, and thermal printers can print directly on 4 x 6 inch labels. Place them at least 1.5 inches from corners, edges and seams, and never reuse or photocopy them.

Why it matters now. Amazon ended US prep and item labeling services for FBA shipments on January 1, 2026. If your supplier doesn’t label units, you or a prep center must.

Thermal, laser or inkjet?

Printer type Amazon guidance Running cost
Direct thermal Recommended; Seller Central tools are optimized for thermal printers No ink or toner; you buy labels
Laser (300 DPI or better) Accepted Toner plus sheet labels
Inkjet Not recommended; susceptible to smearing Ink plus sheets

My take: a 4-inch direct thermal printer is the default for most FBA sellers. It prints item labels and box labels, needs no ink, and Amazon’s tools are built around it. A laser printer with 30-up sheet labels (1 x 2 5/8 inch on US Letter) works if you already own one and label volume is low.

Common models compared

From each maker’s own specifications:

Printer Print method Max print width Label sizes Connectivity
Rollo (USB) Direct thermal, 203 dpi 4.1 in 1.57 to 4.1 in wide USB; listed at $199.99
Zebra ZD421 Direct thermal or thermal transfer, 203 or 300 dpi 4 in 2 to 4.25 in media USB, optional Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
Zebra ZD411 Direct thermal or thermal transfer, 203 or 300 dpi 2 in 1.25 to 2.25 in media USB, optional Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
DYMO LabelWriter 5XL Direct thermal, 300 dpi 4.16 in Up to 4.53 in media USB and Ethernet
DYMO LabelWriter 550 Direct thermal, 300 dpi 2.25 in Up to 2.44 in media USB
MUNBYN 941 series Thermal, 203 dpi (AirPrint model up to 304) 4.3 in labels 1.57 to 4.3 in wide USB, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi by model

Two cautions. The Zebra ZD411 and DYMO 550 are 2-inch printers: fine for item labels, too narrow for 4 x 6 box labels. And DYMO says its LabelWriter 550 series works only with authentic DYMO LW labels, which raises running costs.

How I’d choose

  • One printer for everything: a 4-inch thermal model (Rollo, Zebra ZD421, MUNBYN 941, DYMO 5XL).
  • High volume or a warehouse team: Zebra, for durability and network options.
  • Laptop-free or iPhone-based workflow: a Wi-Fi or AirPrint model.
  • Item labels only, low volume: a 2-inch printer or laser sheets.

When you set up, print a test label and scan it with your phone before labeling a full shipment. Honestly, five minutes of testing beats re-labeling 500 units at a fulfillment center’s expense.
