What is eBay dropshipping? It is selling items on eBay that you do not hold in stock: when a buyer orders, your supplier ships the item directly to them. eBay allows dropshipping, but only one kind. Buying from a wholesale supplier who ships to your customer is permitted. Buying from another retailer or marketplace, such as Amazon, and having it ship to your eBay buyer is not. eBay’s policy says so in plain words.
That distinction decides whether an eBay dropshipping business is sustainable or a suspension waiting to happen. In my view it is the only thing worth understanding before you list anything. This guide explains what the policy allows, why Amazon to eBay dropshipping software leads sellers into trouble, how to dropship on eBay compliantly, and what still lands on you as the seller.
What eBay’s dropshipping policy says
eBay’s policy is short and direct. Its key sentence: listing an item on eBay “and then purchasing the item from another retailer or marketplace that ships directly to your customer is not allowed on eBay.”
It also places the responsibility firmly on you: if you use dropshipping, “you’re still responsible for the safe delivery of the item within the time frame you stated in your listing and for the buyer’s overall satisfaction with their purchase.”
| Practice | Allowed on eBay? |
|---|---|
| A wholesale supplier ships your orders to your buyers | Yes |
| You buy from Amazon, Walmart or another retailer, and it ships to your buyer | No |
| You stock inventory yourself and ship it | Yes, this is ordinary selling |
Is Amazon to eBay dropshipping allowed?
No. Buying an item on Amazon after an eBay sale and having Amazon deliver it to your eBay buyer is exactly the practice eBay prohibits. Software that automates it does not change the rule. It only makes it faster to break.
The practical problems pile up too. The buyer receives a parcel from a different retailer, sometimes with that retailer’s packing slip and pricing. Returns go back to the wrong place. If the retailer is out of stock or raises the price, you are stuck with a sale you cannot fulfill at a profit. I’d stay well away from this model, however easy the software makes it look.
How to do dropshipping on eBay the compliant way
- Find a genuine wholesale supplier, which I’d treat as the whole business, that offers dropshipping as a service, with a written agreement covering pricing, stock levels, shipping times and returns.
- Confirm unbranded shipping. Your buyer should not receive another company’s marketing or invoice.
- Set honest handling times in your listings, based on how fast the supplier actually ships.
- Sync stock and prices. Selling something your supplier no longer has means cancellations, and cancellations hurt your seller standing.
- Upload tracking promptly for every order.
- Own the returns process. Agree with the supplier where returns go and who pays, before the first sale.
- Price for all costs: product, supplier fees, eBay’s fees, shipping, returns and your time.
The risks that remain, even when you follow the rules
Your seller performance is on the line. Late shipments, cancellations and unhappy buyers count against you, not against your supplier.
Margins are thin. Wholesale dropshipping usually leaves less margin than buying stock in bulk, and fees eat into what is left. I’d model every cost before the first listing.
You do not control quality. You never see the product before your buyer does. I’d order samples of anything you list and spot-check orders regularly.
Competition is easy to copy. If you can list a supplier’s catalog, so can anyone else. Differentiation has to come from service, bundles or niche focus, and honestly that is harder than it sounds.
eBay dropshipping vs Amazon dropshipping
Both marketplaces allow dropshipping only on their terms, and both make you the seller of record. Amazon requires you to identify yourself on packing slips and invoices, and also prohibits buying from another retailer to ship to your customer. FAQ
What is eBay dropshipping?
eBay dropshipping is selling items on eBay without holding stock: when an order comes in, your supplier ships the item directly to the buyer. eBay permits it when the supplier is a genuine wholesale or dropshipping supplier, and you remain responsible for delivery and buyer satisfaction.
Is dropshipping allowed on eBay?
Yes, with one major restriction. eBay prohibits listing an item and then buying it from another retailer or marketplace that ships directly to your customer. Dropshipping from a wholesale supplier is allowed.
Is Amazon to eBay dropshipping allowed?
No. Buying from Amazon after an eBay sale and having Amazon ship to your buyer is the practice eBay’s policy prohibits, and automation software does not make it compliant.
How do I start dropshipping on eBay?
Find a genuine wholesale supplier offering dropshipping with a written agreement, confirm unbranded shipping, set honest handling times, keep stock and prices synced, upload tracking promptly, agree a returns process, and price for every cost including eBay’s fees.
Is eBay dropshipping profitable?
It can be, but margins are usually thin and competition is easy to copy. Profit depends on a reliable supplier, accurate pricing that covers all fees and returns, and strong seller performance.
What happens if I break eBay’s dropshipping policy?
eBay can take action against listings and accounts that violate its policies. Separately, late deliveries, cancellations and unhappy buyers from unreliable dropshipping hurt your seller performance either way.
