When Does Shopify Payout? Schedules, Timing and Delays

Table of Contents

When does Shopify payout? With Shopify Payments, you choose a daily, weekly or monthly payout schedule, and each payout covers sales that have finished their settlement time: 3 business days in the US, Canada, the UK and Germany, 2 in Australia, 5 in Japan and 7 in Mexico. In the US, Shopify says payouts typically arrive within 3 to 5 business days after a customer’s payment is captured. New stores wait longer at first, and your bank can add another 1 to 3 days.

I’ll cover how the schedule works, why a payout might be late or held, what each payout status means, and how I’d get paid faster.

How the payout schedule works

In your Shopify Payments settings you can choose daily, weekly or monthly payouts (Japan doesn’t offer daily). Switching schedules costs nothing. If you use Shopify Capital or Shopify Credit, your options may differ.

Settlement time by country

Settlement time is how long a payment takes to become available for payout. Shopify says it varies by country and risk level:

Country Settlement time (business days)
United States 3
Canada 3
United Kingdom 3 (£1 minimum payout)
Germany 3 (€1 minimum payout)
Australia 2
Japan 5
Mexico 7

Weekends and holidays don’t count toward settlement time, and a payout that falls on one is processed the next business day. After that, Shopify notes your bank may take another 1 to 3 days to show the deposit.

Why your first payouts take longer

Shopify says that when you begin receiving payouts, your settlement time is longer. It’s a normal risk step for new accounts, not a sign that something is wrong. In my view, the right move for a new store is to plan cash flow around the slower start: don’t schedule supplier payments for the day you expect your first payout.

Why a payout might be held or delayed

  • Account holds. If Shopify’s banking partners need more information, your Shopify Payments account is put on hold. Shopify’s fix: provide the requested information and reply directly to any email from Shopify. Do it quickly. Holds don’t lift on their own.
  • Reserves. Shopify may hold back part, or sometimes all, of your transactions temporarily, so funds are available for disputes and refunds. Fewer chargebacks and clear refund policies help.
  • Changing your bank account. Payouts pause for 3 to 5 business days after you change bank details.
  • Failed payouts. Often the name on the payout doesn’t match the name on the bank account. Update the bank information and retry.

What payout statuses mean

Status Meaning
Scheduled The payout is being sent to your bank
Deposited Sent to your bank (it doesn’t mean the funds are available yet)
Failed Your bank couldn’t process it; check your bank details

How to get paid faster

Shopify Balance is Shopify’s business money account for US merchants who use Shopify Payments. Shopify says it can deliver store payouts up to 7 days faster than a bank, with most merchants on standard plans receiving payouts within 1 to 3 business days; new merchants can take up to 5 business days.

Daily payouts also smooth cash flow compared with weekly or monthly schedules. Honestly, for most growing stores I’d pick daily unless your accountant prefers fewer, larger deposits.

Outside Shopify Payments? Shopify Payments is available in about 49 countries. Elsewhere you use a third-party payment provider, and payout timing follows that provider’s rules.

Keep payouts flowing

  • Answer verification requests the same day. Not tomorrow.
  • Keep your bank account name identical to your legal business name.
  • Ship fast and communicate clearly to reduce disputes that trigger reserves.
  • Plan inventory purchases around settlement time, especially before peak season.
