Private label protein bars are nutrition bars made by a food co-manufacturer to a stock or custom recipe and wrapped under your brand. They are food, not supplements, so FDA food labeling rules apply. Minimums are higher than in most categories: one US maker publishes 10,000 bars as its starting point for protein bars, and many others quote only on request. The label is where most new brands slip: “high protein” has a legal threshold, the protein percentage needs a protein quality calculation, and sesame joined the major allergens in 2023.
I’ll cover manufacturers, what I’d ask them, the label rules that matter most, and selling bars on Amazon. Labels trip people up. Taste sinks them.
Protein bar manufacturers in the US
From each company’s own website, checked in October 2026:
| Manufacturer | Location | Published terms |
|---|---|---|
| YouBar | Los Angeles, CA | Protein bars from 10,000 bars; SQF, USDA Organic and Kosher certified |
| Coalition Foods | Near Nashville, TN | Custom energy, protein and snack bars in an SQF-certified plant; no minimum published |
| Silver State Baking Co. | Las Vegas, NV | Contract bakery for private label foods, including flow-wrapped nutrition bars; SQF2 and HACCP; no minimum published |
My take: bars are a volume business. Before committing to 10,000 units, test the market with a small run where a maker allows it, or with a stock recipe. Don’t build a custom formula until you know which flavor sells.
What to ask a bar manufacturer
- Food safety certification: SQF, BRC or similar, plus the latest audit.
- Allergen controls: which allergens run on the same lines, and how they prevent cross-contact.
- Protein source and quality: whey, milk, soy, pea or blends. This affects taste, texture and your label (see PDCAAS below).
- Shelf life testing: how long the bar stays soft and safe, and how it is dated.
- Nutrition analysis: will they provide lab-tested nutrition facts?
- Recipe ownership for custom formulas.
When you get samples, leave a few bars in a warm car and a few in the fridge. Hardening, oil separation and melting are the complaints that sink bar reviews.
Label rules that matter most
“High protein” and “good source of protein.” These are nutrient content claims with fixed thresholds. “High”, “rich in” or “excellent source of” requires 20% or more of the Daily Value per reference amount; “good source”, “contains” or “provides” requires 10% to 19%.
The protein %DV and PDCAAS. If you make a protein claim, the Nutrition Facts label must show protein as a % Daily Value, and that percentage is calculated from the grams of protein multiplied by the protein digestibility corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS). Lower-quality proteins count for less. Collagen, for example, scores low. In practice, a bar with “20 g protein” in big type can still fall short of “high protein” if the protein quality is low. Ask your manufacturer to run the calculation before you print. Don’t guess.
The nine major allergens. Under the FASTER Act, sesame became the ninth major food allergen, and since January 1, 2023 it must be labeled as an allergen on packaged foods. Many protein bars contain milk, soy, tree nuts or peanuts, so allergen statements are not optional.
Facility registration. Facilities that manufacture, process, pack or hold food for US consumption must register with the FDA. That is your manufacturer’s job; ask to see it.
Honestly, I’d have a food labeling specialist review the first label. A reprint costs far less than a recall or a pulled listing.
Selling protein bars on Amazon
- Grocery approval depends on the product: if you see “Apply to sell”, you need approval first.
- Expiration dates must be clearly and permanently marked in MM-DD-YYYY or MM-YYYY format.
- Shelf life for FBA: Amazon applies minimum remaining shelf-life rules to dated products; check the current requirement in Seller Central and plan production dates around it.
Bars sell on taste, macros and price per bar. In that order, in my view. Variety packs help shoppers try flavors, and subscription-friendly pack sizes help repeat orders. FAQ
What is the minimum order for private label protein bars?
It varies. One US co-manufacturer publishes 10,000 bars as the starting point for protein bars; others quote on request. Expect higher minimums than for most private label products.
When can a protein bar say “high protein”?
When it provides 20% or more of the Daily Value for protein per reference amount. “Good source of protein” requires 10% to 19%.
What is PDCAAS on a protein bar label?
The protein digestibility corrected amino acid score. If you make a protein claim, the protein %DV must be calculated using it, so protein quality affects the number.
Is sesame a required allergen on protein bars?
Yes. Since January 1, 2023, sesame must be labeled as a major food allergen on packaged foods.
Are protein bars a food or a supplement?
Protein bars are normally sold as conventional food, with a Nutrition Facts label, not a Supplement Facts panel.
Can I sell private label protein bars on Amazon?
Yes. Grocery approval depends on the product, and bars need clear expiration dates and enough remaining shelf life for FBA.
