Amazon Product Research UK: Tools, VAT and the Checklist

Amazon Product Research Checklist for the UK Market
Table of Contents

Amazon product research for the UK runs the same four tests as any marketplace: is there demand, can you enter the competition, does the margin survive every cost, and can you legally sell it. What changes in the UK is the last two, because VAT and post-Brexit compliance alter the arithmetic in ways that catch sellers arriving from the US market.

What also changes is the data. Every major research tool covers amazon.co.uk and none of them covers it as well as they cover amazon.com, which is worth knowing before you trust a number.

Two corrections before the checklist, because most published UK guides are running outdated figures. The VAT registration threshold is no longer £85,000. And Amazon changed how it charges VAT on seller fees in 2024, which affects cash flow for anyone selling here. Both are covered properly below.

We work with sellers across UK and US marketplaces as an Amazon SPN Verified Partner. This is general information rather than tax advice, and a UK accountant should confirm your specific position before you rely on any of it.

The demand test

Read the shape, not just the size. Plot your category term in Google Trends restricted to the United Kingdom over five years. UK seasonality differs from the US in ways that surprise people: the summer is shorter and wetter, back to school falls in September, and Boxing Day matters commercially in a way it does not elsewhere.

Check Amazon UK’s own signals. Best Sellers, Movers and Shakers, and the autocomplete suggestions in the UK storefront. Autocomplete in particular reveals British terminology. Buyers here search for hob, boot, nappy, and cot rather than the American equivalents, and a listing written in US English simply will not be found.

Look at review dates on the top listings. Evenly spread across years means steady demand. Clustered in one quarter means seasonal, whatever a tool tells you.

Do not assume US demand transfers. Housing is smaller, so compact storage and small appliances do disproportionately well. Gardens are common, so outdoor goods have a real market. Air conditioning is rare. Vehicle sizes differ. I’ve found this is where American sellers most often mis-select. In our experience a US bestseller in the UK once, and watched it sit for 8 months, and the mistake was invisible until the stock arrived.

The competition test

Two failure modes, and sellers usually guard against only one.

Too crowded looks like entrenched brands, thousands of reviews, and Amazon Retail holding the Buy Box.

Too empty is the one people miss. Amazon UK is a smaller marketplace than Amazon US, so a category with almost no sellers often has almost no demand rather than an opening. Absence of competition here is more often a verdict than an opportunity.

Check the top listings for review counts, ratings, listing quality, and whether Amazon itself is selling. Then read the negative reviews properly. Recurring complaints are your product specification, handed over for free, and this is the most valuable hour in the whole process.

One UK-specific advantage worth noting: in our experience listing quality across Amazon UK is frequently weaker than in the US market. Where that is true in your category, good images and content clear the bar more cheaply than they would elsewhere, and I’d treat that as the cheapest edge available here.

VAT, corrected

This is the section to read even if you skip the rest.

The registration threshold is £90,000, raised from £85,000 on 1 April 2024. Guides still quoting £85,000 are out of date. The threshold applies to taxable turnover on a rolling 12 month basis.

Non-UK-established sellers have no threshold. If your business is established outside the UK and you store goods here, you generally must register for VAT from the first sale regardless of turnover. This trips up overseas sellers sending stock into UK fulfillment centers constantly.

Amazon changed how it charges VAT on fees. From 1 August 2024, Amazon began issuing invoices for UK selling fees through its UK establishment rather than its Luxembourg entity, which means UK VAT is now charged on those fees for UK-established sellers. If you are VAT registered you reclaim it, so the effect is on cash flow rather than final cost. If you are not registered, it is a real increase. Either way, model it rather than discovering it in a settlement report.

Build VAT into the price, not on top of it. UK consumer prices are quoted inclusive of VAT. A product listed at £24 with standard-rated VAT yields roughly £20 before Amazon takes anything. American sellers used to tax being added at checkout routinely overstate their UK revenue by 20% in their first model, and I have seen that single error make an unviable product look attractive.

Rates vary. Standard rate is 20%, but some goods including many books, children’s clothing, and certain food items are zero rated or reduced. Confirm your product’s rate before modeling.

Compliance, corrected

On UKCA and CE marking. Post-Brexit guidance said UKCA marking would replace CE marking for goods placed on the market in Great Britain. That deadline was extended repeatedly, and the UK government has since confirmed continued recognition of CE marking for most product categories placed on the GB market. Plenty of articles still describe UKCA as mandatory and CE as expired, which is not the current position.

What that means practically: check your specific product category rather than applying a general rule, because the arrangements differ by category and Northern Ireland follows separate rules again. Getting this wrong is expensive in both directions, since unnecessary UKCA testing costs money you did not need to spend.

A UK Responsible Person may be required. For several regulated categories, goods placed on the GB market need a UK-based economic operator identified on the product or packaging. Overseas sellers frequently need to appoint one, and Amazon enforces this for the categories it applies to.

Product safety standards still apply in full. Children’s products, electricals, cosmetics, and toys all carry testing and documentation requirements. Our guide to compliance requirements for children’s toys covers that category specifically, including the UK position.

Import duty applies from everywhere, including the EU. Post-Brexit, EU imports are not automatically duty free. Preferential rates depend on rules of origin, which means goods manufactured in China and shipped via an EU warehouse generally do not qualify.

The margin test

Build the UK number from the ground up rather than adjusting a US model.

Line Note
Selling price Inclusive of VAT
Less VAT Usually 20%, sometimes zero or reduced
Less referral fee Percentage varies by category
Less FBA fee UK fee schedule, not the US one
Less landed cost Including duty and freight
Less advertising per unit
Less returns allowance Varies enormously by category
Net profit

Price points. Roughly £15 to £40 is a comfortable range for many categories, though the honest answer depends on your margin rather than any published band. Below about £10 the fees consume too much. Above £50 the consideration cycle lengthens and advertising costs rise.

Size and weight matter more here. UK storage and fulfillment costs make bulky low-value goods a poor bet. Compact and light is a genuine advantage, and in my experience it is worth more than a slightly better cost price.

Storage escalates the same way. Amazon’s aged inventory surcharge threshold applies here too, as our guide to FBA storage fees explains.

Amazon product research tools for the UK

The main tools all cover amazon.co.uk. Two things separate them here: data depth, and whether you remember to switch marketplace. The second sounds trivial. It is not.

Tool UK coverage What it is best for here
Helium 10 Full UK marketplace Keyword volume and the broadest feature set
Jungle Scout Full UK marketplace Sales estimates and opportunity scoring
Keepa Excellent, and the best value Price and rank history, which is the most reliable UK signal
Amazon Brand Analytics Native, needs Brand Registry Actual Amazon search data rather than an estimate
Google Trends (UK) Free Seasonality, which UK sellers underweight

Set the marketplace before you research anything. I have seen this go wrong more than once. The failure is invisible, which is what makes it dangerous: the numbers look entirely plausible. They are just about a different country. Make it the first click of every session.

Treat UK sales estimates as weaker than US ones. These tools infer sales from rank. The models behind that inference were calibrated on vastly more American data, so the UK output is a rougher guess wearing the same confident interface. Read it as an order of magnitude. I would not order inventory on a thirty percent gap between two products here.

Keepa is the one I would not research the UK without. Price and rank history is observed rather than modeled, so it does not suffer the calibration problem above. It shows you whether a product’s rank is genuinely stable, whether the price has been eroding all year, and how many sellers have come and gone from the listing. For the UK specifically, that observed history is worth more than any estimate.

What free gets you. Amazon’s own Best Sellers, Movers and Shakers and New Releases pages are free, UK-specific and real. Brand Analytics is free with Brand Registry and better than any third-party estimate because it is Amazon’s own search data. Our roundup of free Amazon product research tools compares the free tiers in general; everything there works on the UK marketplace with the data-depth caveat above.

What UK research needs that US research does not

Check the product is legal here first, before demand. UKCA marking, UK-specific restrictions and post-Brexit rules can disqualify a product outright, and demand research on something you cannot sell is wasted time. The compliance section below covers it.

Price against the VAT-inclusive shelf price. UK listings show prices inclusive of VAT, so a margin modeled on the displayed price without removing VAT is wrong by a fifth before you start.

Look at UK-specific competition. A category crowded on amazon.com can be thin on amazon.co.uk. Sometimes the reverse. In our experience this gap is where the genuine UK opportunity lives, and you only see it once you stop reading across from American data.

The Amazon product research checklist for the UK market, in order

  1. Confirm the product is legal to sell in the UK and identify its compliance requirements.
  2. Confirm the VAT rate and whether you must register.
  3. Model margin in pounds with VAT removed from the top line.
  4. Check demand shape over five years, UK filtered.
  5. Read every negative review on the top three listings.
  6. Order samples and compare them physically against the incumbent.
  7. Verify the supplier can meet UK requirements, using a pre-shipment inspection where the value justifies it.

Our guides to finding evergreen products and wholesale suppliers cover the parts that are the same in every market, and our product research service covers having it done for you.

FAQ

What is the best Amazon product research tool for the UK?

Helium 10 and Jungle Scout both cover amazon.co.uk fully, and Keepa is the one I would not research the UK without, because price and rank history is observed rather than estimated and therefore does not suffer the weaker UK calibration the estimate-based tools have. Brand Analytics, free with Brand Registry, beats all of them where you have access.

Are Amazon product research tools accurate for the UK marketplace?

Less accurate than for the US. Sales estimates are inferred from rank using models calibrated on far more American data, so treat a UK figure as an order of magnitude rather than a number. Observed data such as Keepa’s price and rank history does not have this problem.

How is Amazon product research different in the UK?

Three things. Legality is checked first because UKCA marking and post-Brexit rules can disqualify a product outright. Prices display inclusive of VAT, so margin modeled on the shelf price is wrong by a fifth. And competition differs by category from the US, which is where the real opportunity usually is.

What is the VAT registration threshold for Amazon UK sellers?

£90,000 of taxable turnover on a rolling 12 month basis, raised from £85,000 on 1 April 2024. Sellers whose business is established outside the UK and who store goods in the UK generally must register from the first sale, with no threshold applying.

Does Amazon charge VAT on seller fees in the UK?

Yes. From 1 August 2024 Amazon began invoicing UK selling fees through its UK establishment, applying UK VAT to those fees for UK-established sellers. VAT-registered sellers can reclaim it, so the effect is on cash flow, while unregistered sellers face a genuine increase.

Is UKCA marking mandatory instead of CE marking?

Not as a blanket rule. The UK government extended recognition of CE marking for most product categories placed on the Great Britain market, after repeatedly postponing the UKCA deadline. Check your specific category, since arrangements differ and Northern Ireland follows separate rules.

What is a good price range for Amazon UK products?

Roughly £15 to £40 suits many categories, though margin matters more than any published band. Below £10 the fees take too much, and above £50 consideration cycles lengthen and advertising costs rise.

Does US product research transfer to the UK market?

Partially. Demand patterns differ because homes are smaller, gardens are common, air conditioning is rare, and terminology differs. Search terms in particular need rewriting, since British buyers use different words for the same products.

Do I need a UK Responsible Person to sell on Amazon UK?

For several regulated product categories, goods placed on the GB market require a UK-based economic operator identified on the product or packaging. Overseas sellers often need to appoint one, and Amazon enforces this where it applies.

Last updated: August 29, 2026. This is general information for sellers, not tax or legal advice. UK VAT thresholds, Amazon fee invoicing arrangements, and UKCA and CE marking rules change.
