A UPC not working on Amazon<\/strong> is a barcode Amazon’s catalog refuses to accept, and it almost always
\nreduces to one of 5 specific problems. The error message tells you which. The most common by a distance: the barcode was not issued to you by GS1.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Amazon validates barcodes against the GS1 database.<\/strong> It checks whether the company prefix in your UPC
\nbelongs to the brand you are claiming. A barcode bought cheaply from a reseller belongs to whoever
\noriginally registered that prefix, which is not you, so the check fails.<\/p>\n

That is not a bug you can work around.<\/strong> It is the check working, and no amount of resubmitting changes
\nthe answer.<\/p>\n

The five errors, and what each means<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Read the top row twice.<\/strong> A resold barcode is the single most frequent cause,<\/strong> and it is also the one
\nsellers most resist accepting, because they paid for it in good faith. In our experience that conversation
\nis the whole support ticket.<\/p>\n

Cause 1: the barcode is not really yours<\/h2>\n

The expensive lesson, so worth being plain about.<\/p>\n

GS1 issues company prefixes to one specific registered company.<\/strong> Every UPC constructed on that prefix traces
\nback to them. Buy individual barcodes from a third-party marketplace and the prefix belongs to
\nwhoever registered it, possibly a decade ago, and I’d assume that is the case unless GS1 invoiced you directly.<\/p>\n

Amazon’s check is a lookup rather than an opinion.<\/strong> It compares the brand name on your listing against the GS1
\nrecord for that prefix. Mismatch, rejection. No discretion involved.<\/p>\n

The fix is one of 2 things.<\/strong> Buy barcodes from GS1 in your own country, so the prefix genuinely belongs to you.
\nOr apply for a GTIN exemption, where you qualify. I’d decide between them deliberately. Our guide to

Which one to choose.<\/strong> GS1 barcodes are portable and work everywhere, including retail and other
\nmarketplaces. An exemption is free and Amazon-only. For a brand you intend to build, I’d buy the real
\nbarcodes,<\/strong> and in our experience the sellers who regret the exemption are the ones who later needed GTINs
\nfor a retail conversation.<\/p>\n

A cheap barcode is not a saving.<\/strong> It is a delay, plus the cost of doing it properly afterwards, plus whatever the delay cost you. In our experience sellers count only the first.<\/p>\n

How GS1 validation actually works, in plain terms<\/h2>\n

Worth understanding once, because it explains every error above and every failed workaround below.<\/p>\n

A UPC is not a random number.<\/strong> It contains a company prefix, issued by GS1 to one specific registered
\nbusiness, followed by an item reference that business assigns. The prefix is the part that identifies who
\nowns the barcode.<\/p>\n

GS1 maintains the register.<\/strong> Anyone can look up which company a prefix belongs to. Amazon does exactly
\nthat, automatically, at the moment you submit a listing.<\/p>\n

So the check is a name comparison.<\/strong> Amazon reads the brand name on your listing, reads the company on the
\nGS1 record for that prefix, and asks whether they correspond. Two different names means rejection, and no
\nresubmission changes a database lookup.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why resold barcodes exist at all.<\/strong> Before Amazon enforced this, a prefix holder could sell individual
\ncodes and nobody checked. Those sellers still operate, the barcodes are technically valid GS1 numbers, and
\nthey are registered to somebody else. Valid and unusable are not the same thing,<\/strong> which is the distinction
\nthat costs people money.<\/p>\n

One consequence sellers do not expect.<\/strong> If you already have listings live on resold barcodes, they may
\nwork until something triggers revalidation, at which point they can fail retroactively. In our experience
\nthat discovery arrives at the worst moment, usually during a catalog edit before a busy season.<\/p>\n

What I’d do about that.<\/strong> Audit which of your ASINs sit on barcodes you did not obtain from GS1 yourself.
\nIf any of them matter, migrate them deliberately rather than waiting to be told.<\/p>\n

Cause 2: the GTIN is already in use<\/h2>\n

Different problem, and frequently good news.<\/p>\n

If the product genuinely exists in Amazon’s catalog<\/strong>, you do not need a new listing. You add your offer
\nto the existing ASIN. That is how wholesale and arbitrage work.<\/p>\n

Search the ASIN by the barcode<\/strong> before assuming an error. Returns a product? List against it, and I’d be pleased rather than frustrated.<\/p>\n

If the existing listing is wrong or poor<\/strong> and you own the brand, Brand Registry gives you the authority

If somebody else has used your barcode<\/strong>, that is a catalog support case requiring evidence rather than
\nsomething resubmission will resolve. I’d gather the GS1 record first.<\/p>\n

Cause 3, 4, and 5: not the barcode at all<\/h2>\n

Three errors that mention the GTIN and are caused by something else.<\/p>\n

Wrong product type.<\/strong> Amazon’s product type dictates which attributes are mandatory. Select the wrong one
\nand the listing rejects, occasionally with wording that mentions the identifier. Verify the product type
\nbefore anything else,<\/strong> since correcting it costs nothing and I have watched it waste entire days.<\/p>\n

Missing required attributes.<\/strong> The error names the fields. Populate them. Populate the optional safety and
\ncompliance attributes too, since blank fields quietly exclude you from filters shoppers are actively using, and in our experience nobody notices that exclusion.<\/p>\n

Brand gated or restricted.<\/strong> The barcode is fine and the brand needs approval. Attempt the listing and
\nread exactly what Amazon asks for, which is usually supplier invoices in a specific format. Our guide to

A diagnostic order that saves time<\/h2>\n

Six steps, cheapest first.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Read the exact error text<\/strong> rather than the summary. The wording distinguishes a GTIN problem from an
    \n attribute problem.<\/li>\n
  2. Search Amazon for the barcode.<\/strong> If an ASIN exists, your job is adding an offer, not creating a
    \n listing.<\/li>\n
  3. Check the product type<\/strong> you selected against the product you actually have.<\/li>\n
  4. Check whether the brand or category is gated<\/strong> by attempting the listing and reading the requirement.<\/li>\n
  5. Verify the barcode’s origin.<\/strong> Did it come from GS1, in your name? If not, this is your answer.<\/li>\n
  6. Then decide: GS1 or exemption.<\/strong> Not before, because the previous five steps are free and this one is
    \n not.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Steps 1 to 4 take about fifteen minutes<\/strong> and resolve a good share of cases without spending anything. In
    \nour experience sellers jump to step 6 and buy barcodes they did not need.<\/p>\n

    What not to do<\/h2>\n

    Four things, and the first two make it worse.<\/p>\n

    Do not resubmit the same barcode repeatedly.<\/strong> The validation outcome will not alter, and repeated failed
    \nattempts generate catalog noise you may have to explain afterwards. I’d stop after the second attempt.<\/p>\n

    Do not buy further cheap barcodes.<\/strong> Identical prefix problem, identical outcome, and I’d expect no different result.<\/p>\n

    Do not invent a barcode.<\/strong> It will fail validation, and should it collide with a genuine prefix you
    \nhave manufactured a considerably worse problem for yourself. In my experience that recovery is lengthy.<\/p>\n

    Do not create a duplicate listing to route around the error.<\/strong> A detached duplicate splits your reviews
    \nand sales history, and cleaning it up is harder than fixing the original. I’d raise a catalog case instead.<\/p>\n

    One last thought on how sellers end up here.<\/strong> Almost nobody buys a resold barcode carelessly. They buy
    \nit because a legitimate-looking vendor offered exactly what they needed at a fraction of the GS1 price, and
    \nnothing about that transaction announced itself as a problem. I’d rather explain the mechanism than imply
    \ncarelessness, because understanding why the check exists is what stops the mistake recurring on the next
