Averaging the two produces a figure describing neither.

Category variance swamps everything else. A niche accessory with 4 competing offers and a saturated
consumable with 200 offers cannot share a target. Any single number pretending to cover both is
arithmetic without meaning, and I’d distrust the publisher rather than the figure.

Price position is invisible in a benchmark and decisive in reality. Two identical listings, one priced
at the category median and one 30% above it, will diverge sharply. Neither is “underperforming” against a
benchmark. One is simply dearer.

Advertising placement muddles it further. Sponsored impressions and organic impressions are counted
separately in different reports, and sellers routinely compare a Sponsored Products CTR against a supposed
organic benchmark. Apples and weather.

What replaces the benchmark. Two comparisons, both available free. Your own CTR on the same term, same
placement, last month. And click share against the ASINs genuinely competing for that term, from Brand
Analytics. Both control for the variables a published figure ignores, which is precisely why they are
harder to quote and considerably more useful.

One habit I’d adopt. Write down your current CTR per important term before changing anything. That
becomes your benchmark, it costs nothing, and it is the only one that describes your product.

Diagnose before touching anything

Ten minutes. It prevents the commonest waste in listing work.

Open Search Query Performance in Brand Analytics. Read impression share and click share separately.

High impression share, low click share means shoppers see you and scroll past. A CTR problem. This page is for you.

Healthy click share, weak cart share means they arrive and leave. That is conversion, not CTR. Our guide
to improving your product detail page
covers that half.

Also check which ASINs take the clicks on your terms. If they are a different product type, your CTR is
low because the demand was never yours. No image fixes a relevance mismatch, and I’d drop the term
rather than the image.

Our guide to Amazon Search Frequency Rank covers
reading that report, where rank 1 is the most searched term.

The main image, which does most of the work

If the diagnosis says CTR, this is where the money goes. Nowhere else, first.

Judge it at thumbnail size on a phone. Shrink it to roughly a postage stamp and look. That is how the
decision is actually made, and I’ve found this single check changes more images than any critique of
composition.

One second to recognize. A shopper should know what the product is instantly. Clever angles that hide
the shape lose, every time, and I’d sacrifice the artful shot without hesitating.

Fill the frame. White space around a small product reads as a smaller product. I’d crop harder than feels comfortable.

Show scale where size is the question. If your reviews argue about dimensions, the main image is where to
settle the argument, within Amazon’s rules. I’d settle it there rather than in a bullet nobody reaches.

No text, no badges, no props Amazon disallows. Pure white background. Requirements rather than
preferences, and in our experience the violation is usually inherited from an old supplier image.

Test one change at a time. If you have Brand Registry, Manage Your Experiments lets you A/B test the
main image properly rather than swapping and hoping. Our guide to
A/B testing your Amazon listings
covers running it.

Price, the lever sellers avoid discussing

Uncomfortable. It also moves CTR faster than anything except the image.

A shopper comparing four tiles sees price before they read anything. If you are the dearest tile with
the fewest reviews, CTR reflects that arithmetic rather than your photography.

You do not have to be cheapest. You have to be explicable. Sitting 40% above the neighboring tile with
nothing visible justifying it is the difficulty, rather than the price in isolation.

What is visible at tile level: price, image, rating, review count, badge. Five things. Your
justification has to live inside one of them, because the shopper does not click to find out, and in my
experience sellers put it in the bullets instead.

A coupon flash is the cheap test. It alters the tile without altering your list price, and it reveals
within a week whether price was the constraint. I’d run that before commissioning any photography.

Title, badges, and the rest

Smaller levers. Quicker to pull, and worth pulling once the image is right.

The first 60 characters are the title. The rest is truncated on a phone, and most Amazon traffic is on a
phone. Brand, product, and the one attribute that decides the purchase.

A stuffed title lowers CTR. It reads as spam to the person deciding. When I have cut over-long titles,
click share improved rather than fell.

Review count is a genuine CTR factor and the slowest of them all to change. Amazon Vine on a new product remains the
sanctioned route to a first handful, and I’d enroll rather than wait. Our guide to
paid Amazon reviews and what is permitted
covers why the shortcuts cost more than they return.

Delivery speed shows on the tile. For a merchant-fulfilled seller competing against Prime offers, that
is a structural CTR disadvantage rather than a copy problem.

How to measure whether you improved anything

CTR is noisy. It is also easy to fool yourself about, so measure deliberately.

Compare identical term, identical placement, month over month. Never account-average CTR, which blends
everything indiscriminately and lurches whenever a campaign gets paused.

Give it 2 to 4 weeks. Impressions accumulate slowly per term. A week of data is weather, not climate.

Watch conversion at the same time. A CTR rise with a conversion fall usually means the image now
overpromises, and that trade is a loss dressed as a win. I’d treat that pattern as a warning rather than
a mixed result.

Change one element per test. Otherwise you learn nothing reusable on the next product, which in our experience is how sellers end up rebuilding the same listing twice.

Track click share alongside CTR. Click share measures you against the ASINs genuinely competing for that
phrase, which is the sole comparison controlling for the phrase’s own behavior. I’d report both.

FAQ

What is a good CTR on Amazon?

There is no published Amazon benchmark, and any figure quoted without your category, placement, and price
attached is meaningless. Compare against your own CTR on the same term last month, and against click share
for the top ASINs on that term in Brand Analytics.

What affects Amazon click-through rate most?

The main image judged at thumbnail size, then your price relative to the offers beside you, then review
count and rating. Title matters moderately in its first 60 characters. Nothing below the fold affects CTR
at all, because nobody has reached it.

How do I know if I have a CTR problem or a conversion problem?

Read impression share and click share separately in Search Query Performance. High impression share with
low click share is a CTR problem. Healthy click share with weak cart share is conversion, and fixing the
wrong half is the commonest waste in listing work.

Does the product description affect CTR?

No. Bullets, description, and A+ Content sit below the fold and cannot influence whether somebody clicks
from search results. They influence conversion once the visitor arrives, which is a different problem with
different fixes.

Can price be the reason my CTR is low?

Frequently, yes. Shoppers see price before they read anything, so being noticeably dearer than the tile
beside you with nothing visible to justify it suppresses clicks. A coupon flash is the cheap way to test
whether price was the constraint before reshooting images.

How long before I can judge a CTR change?

Two to four weeks, comparing the same term and placement rather than account-average CTR. Change one element
per test, and watch conversion alongside, since a CTR rise with a conversion fall usually means the image
now overpromises.

Last updated: August 31, 2026. Amazon’s image requirements, Brand Analytics reports, and experiment tools
change over time; Seller Central carries the current rules for your account. An earlier version of this
page published CTR benchmark figures and a comparison against Google Ads click-through rates. Amazon
publishes no CTR benchmark and neither figure was verifiable, so both have been removed.

<!-- Schema: Article + FAQPage
