It runs cheapest first. Most sellers start by rewriting the listing, which is the most expensive fix and almost never the actual cause.

This page is the diagnostic. If you want the reference list of what drives Amazon rankings in the first place, that is a different question and it lives on our guide to Amazon product ranking factors.

Start with the date

Before anything else, pin down when it fell. Not roughly. The day. Open Search Console or your rank tracker and find the day. Then open Seller Central and look at what else changed within 48 hours either side.

I’d treat this as the whole of the diagnosis, honestly. Almost every ranking drop has a paired event, and once you have both dates the cause usually names itself. Sellers who skip this step end up changing four things at once and never learn which one mattered.

A gradual slide over weeks is a different animal from a cliff in one day. Cliffs are usually mechanical: stock, Buy Box, a suppression. Slides are usually competitive or conversion-related.

The seven causes, cheapest to check first

Check

What you are looking for

Typical fix time

1. Stock

Did you go out of stock, even briefly?

Days to weeks

2. Buy Box

Did you lose it to another seller or to price?

Hours

3. Listing edits

Did the title, bullets or backend terms change?

Hours

4. Reviews and rating

Did the star rating fall, or a bad review land?

Weeks

5. Competitors

Did someone new enter or a rival cut price?

Ongoing

6. Policy and compliance

Any flag, suppression or restriction?

Days

7. Conversion rate

Did sessions hold but units fall?

Weeks

1. Stock

The most common cause, and the one people forget. By the time they investigate, the stock is back.

Going out of stock costs ranking immediately. Recovery is not. Amazon has to re-establish the sales velocity the ranking was built on, and I’ve found that takes far longer than the outage did. Three days out can cost weeks of position.

Check your inventory history, not your current level. If there was any gap, that is very likely your answer and no listing change will fix it. The fix is to restock and rebuild velocity, which means advertising harder than usual for a while.

2. The Buy Box

Lose the Buy Box and you lose most of your conversions. Ranking follows conversions.

Check the Buy Box percentage report. A drop matching your rank date is conclusive. The usual triggers: a competitor undercutting you, your own price crossing the threshold, a repricer misbehaving, or a fulfillment change that made your offer less attractive.

Our guide on increasing Buy Box percentage covers the mechanics. For diagnosis, all you need is whether the percentage moved.

3. A listing edit

Anybody with account access can move ranking by editing a title, a bullet, a backend keyword field or a category. Within days. Sometimes within hours.

I’d check this even when you are sure nobody changed anything. Amazon itself sometimes overwrites listing content from the catalog, particularly on listings where another seller has contributed data, and that happens without notifying you.

Look at the listing history if you have it, or compare against your own records. The specific thing to check is whether a keyword you ranked for is still present in the title or backend terms. Removing a phrase you rank for removes the ranking.

4. Reviews and rating

A rating falling from 4.4 to 4.1 does not look dramatic. It is. That gap moves conversion, and conversion moves ranking.

Check for a cluster of recent negative reviews and read them. If several complain about the same thing, something changed in the product or the packaging, and the ranking drop is a symptom rather than the problem. In my experience that is the case more often than sellers expect, particularly after a supplier change or a new production run.

5. Competitors

Sometimes nothing you did changed. Someone else simply got better, and I’d say this is underdiagnosed.

Look at page one for your main keyword. A new entrant with aggressive advertising, a rival cutting price, or an established seller finally optimizing a lazy listing will all push you down. There is no fault here to find, and the response is competitive rather than corrective.

I’d be honest that this is the hardest cause to act on, because the fix is to out-compete rather than to repair.

6. Policy, compliance and suppression

Check Account Health first, then the listing’s own status.

A suppressed listing does not rank. A listing missing a required compliance document can be restricted quietly. A policy warning on the account can affect everything. These usually announce themselves, but not always loudly, and I’ve found sellers miss the notification because it sits in a part of Seller Central they never open.

If this is the cause, nothing else matters until it is cleared. Our guide to Amazon seller account reinstatement covers the appeal route when a restriction is already in place.

7. Conversion rate

Last, because it is hardest to fix. This is the one that explains slow slides rather than cliffs.

Open the Business Report and compare sessions against unit session percentage. If sessions held steady and conversion fell, your traffic is arriving and leaving. That points at price, images, reviews, competitor comparison, or a delivery promise that got worse.

If sessions fell and conversion held, it is a ranking or visibility problem rather than a listing problem, and you are back to causes one through six.

What I would not do

Two responses make things worse. Both are common, and I’ve watched both cost more than the original drop.

Do not rewrite the listing immediately. A rewrite resets whatever relevance the listing had accumulated and introduces a second variable while you are still diagnosing the first. I’d leave the listing alone until you know the cause. If the cause turns out to be a listing edit, you are reverting rather than rewriting, which is a different and smaller job.

Do not cut price reflexively. It feels like action and it usually just lowers your margin without recovering rank, because price was rarely the cause. If you lost the Buy Box on price then yes, price is the lever. Otherwise it is not.

There is a third habit worth breaking: changing several things at once. When the ranking eventually recovers you will not know why, which means the next time it happens you start from zero again.

The one habit that makes every future drop easier

Keep a change log for each product. A dated line whenever anything moves: a price change, a listing edit, a restock, a new competitor noticed, a supplier batch, an ad budget change.

This sounds like bureaucracy. It is not. It is the difference between a twenty-minute diagnosis and a week of guessing.

I’d keep it in whatever you already use. A spreadsheet is fine. The only requirement is that it carries dates, because the diagnosis above is entirely a matter of matching two dates. Without the log you are reconstructing history from memory and from whatever Seller Central still shows you, and Seller Central does not keep everything.

There is a second reason to keep one that matters more over time. When a fix works, you learn what worked. When it does not, you learn that too. In our experience sellers who keep a log stop having the same ranking problem twice, and sellers who do not keep having it every quarter and treating it as new each time.

One more thing worth logging that people leave out: what you did in response, and the date. Half the value of the record is knowing which of your own actions preceded a recovery.

Recovering after you have found it

Fixing the cause is not the same as recovering the position, and the gap between those two things surprises people.

Ranking rests on demonstrated sales velocity. Remove the cause and you still have to rebuild the evidence. That usually means advertising harder than the unit economics justify for a few weeks, deliberately, to re-establish the conversion signal. In our experience this is the step sellers skip, and then they conclude the fix did not work when actually the fix worked and nothing rebuilt the velocity behind it.

Expect it to take longer than the drop did. A ranking that fell in a day over a stockout does not come back in a day.

And measure against the keyword, not the best seller rank. BSR moves with category-wide seasonality and will mislead you about your own progress.

FAQ

Why did my Amazon product ranking drop suddenly?

A sudden drop is usually mechanical: a stockout, losing the Buy Box, a listing edit, or a suppression or policy flag. Find the exact date it fell, then look for a matching event in Seller Central within 48 hours either side. Gradual slides point instead at competitors or conversion rate.

How long does it take to recover an Amazon ranking?

Longer than the drop took. Ranking rests on demonstrated sales velocity, so after removing the cause you have to rebuild that evidence, usually by advertising harder than the economics justify for several weeks. A ranking lost to a three-day stockout can take weeks to return.

Does going out of stock hurt Amazon ranking permanently?

Not permanently, but recovery is slower than the outage. Amazon re-establishes ranking on renewed sales velocity rather than restoring the previous position, so the rebuild takes longer than the gap itself. Restocking alone is rarely enough without pushing velocity.

Should I rewrite my listing when rankings drop?

Not before you know the cause. A rewrite discards accumulated relevance and adds a second variable while the first is still unidentified. If the cause turns out to be an unintended listing edit, the correct move is reverting it, which is much smaller than a rewrite.

Can a competitor cause my ranking to drop?

Yes, and there is nothing to repair when that happens. A new entrant advertising aggressively, a rival cutting price, or an established seller finally optimizing a weak listing will all push you down. The response is competitive rather than corrective.

How do I tell a ranking problem from a conversion problem?

Compare sessions against unit session percentage in your Business Report. Steady sessions with falling conversion means traffic arrives and leaves, pointing at price, images, reviews or delivery promise. Falling sessions with steady conversion means visibility, which sends you back to stock, Buy Box and suppression.

Last updated: September 12, 2026.
