Selling electronics on Amazon differs from selling anything else in three specific ways, and each one costs money if you meet it late. Certification documents are required before listing, not after. Lithium batteries change how the item can be shipped and stored. And return rates run materially higher than the site average<\/strong>, which changes the margin you need.<\/p>\n

Everything else is ordinary Amazon work. Those three things are where sellers get hurt, and I’d deal with all three before ordering anything.<\/p>\n

Certifications, and who asks for what<\/h2>\n

Two different parties want documents, and I’ve found confusing them wastes weeks.<\/p>\n

Regulators<\/strong> require compliance regardless of where you sell. In the US, anything with a radio needs FCC authorization. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, wireless chargers. Mains-powered items generally need safety certification from a recognized testing laboratory, which in North America means UL or ETL. In the EU and UK the equivalents are CE and UKCA marking. Different marks, same idea.<\/p>\n

Amazon<\/strong> requires evidence of that compliance, and will ask for it either at listing or later during a review. What it asks for varies by category, marketplace and product type, so check the requirements for your specific ASIN in Seller Central<\/a> rather than assuming.<\/p>\n

The practical rule I’d follow: get the documents before you place the order, not before you list. A supplier who has certification sends it in a day. A supplier who does not will stall. That stall is your answer.<\/p>\n

One trap worth naming. A certificate belonging to a component<\/em> is not a certificate for your product<\/em>. Suppliers routinely send the test report for the power adapter or the battery cell and present it as covering the finished item. In our experience that is the most common documentation problem in this category, and it is only discovered when Amazon rejects it.<\/p>\n

Batteries change everything about selling electronics on Amazon<\/h2>\n

Anything containing a lithium battery is a dangerous goods item as far as shipping is concerned, and that has consequences well beyond paperwork.<\/p>\n

You will need a battery test summary<\/strong> under UN 38.3, and usually a safety data sheet, both from the manufacturer. Amazon then runs a dangerous goods review before FBA accepts the item. That review takes time. Build it into the timeline rather than discovering it with stock sitting at a warehouse door.<\/p>\n

Storage and shipping options narrow too. Air freight for lithium batteries is restricted and expensive, which pushes you toward sea freight and a longer lead time. Some fulfillment centers handle these items. Some do not, and that affects placement and delivery speed.<\/p>\n

Loose batteries, meaning cells shipped separately rather than installed in a device, are treated more strictly than installed ones. If your product can ship with the battery inside, it usually should.<\/p>\n

I’ve found this is the single most underestimated part of the category. Sellers price a product on unit cost and referral fees and then discover the freight is double what they assumed because the item cannot fly.<\/p>\n

Returns are the real margin problem<\/h2>\n

In our experience electronics come back more often than almost anything else, and for reasons that are not always defects.<\/p>\n

The buyer could not make it work. Wrong variant. Bought to solve a problem it does not solve. Incompatible with something they already own. Genuine faults are a minority of returns here, and that matters, because a returned working item is a completely different cost from a broken one.<\/p>\n

Three things reduce it more than anything else I’ve tried.<\/p>\n

Compatibility stated explicitly and early.<\/strong> Not buried in a bullet. In the title and the first image if it matters, listing exactly what the product works with and what it does not.<\/p>\n

Voltage and plug type made unmissable.<\/strong> A device sold in the US that ships with a European plug generates returns and one-star reviews in equal measure.<\/p>\n

Setup instructions written for someone who has never seen the product.<\/strong> A surprising share of “defective” returns are working products the buyer could not configure. I’d put a short setup guide in the listing images, because that is where people look before they look at the manual.<\/p>\n

Then price for the return rate you actually get rather than the one you hope for. If a category returns at 15%, a margin that works at 5% returns is not a margin.<\/p>\n

Counterfeits, in both directions<\/h2>\n

I’d rank electronics as the platform’s highest counterfeit exposure, and you can be hurt as either the victim or the accused.<\/p>\n

If you are sourcing branded electronics for resale, verify the supply chain properly. An inauthentic-item complaint is among the hardest allegations to clear, and I’ve found sellers underestimate that badly. You need invoices from an authorized distributor showing the chain from the brand to you. Nothing less works.<\/p>\n

If you are selling your own brand, enroll in Brand Registry as early as you can and label your FBA inventory with FNSKU rather than manufacturer barcodes. Commingled inventory means a customer buying from you can receive another seller’s units, and if those are counterfeit the complaint lands on your account. Getting an electronics listing itself right<\/h2>\n

The category rewards specificity more than persuasion, and I’d write it that way. Buyers of electronics are comparing specifications, and a listing that omits one they care about loses to one that includes it.<\/p>\n
