The difference between Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods that actually matters to a seller is structural rather than demographic. Amazon Fresh is a grocery channel inside Amazon’s own ecosystem, reached through Amazon’s programs. Whole Foods Market is a physical retail chain, reached the way any grocery chain is reached: through a category buyer, a distributor, and a purchase order.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Most articles comparing the two describe customer profiles and pricing psychology, which is fine as far as it goes but skips the thing that decides whether you can sell into either. They are not two settings on the same dial. They are two entirely different commercial relationships that happen to share a parent company.<\/p>\n

We work with brands selling on Amazon and moving into other channels. In our experience the difference between Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods is the single most misunderstood thing in grocery ecommerce, so below is the practical version: what each one is, how you would actually get in, and what changes for you either way.<\/p>\n

What they actually are<\/h2>\n

Amazon Fresh<\/strong> is Amazon’s grocery offering, covering online ordering with fast delivery and a set of physical stores. It sits inside the Amazon account structure you already know. Selection includes national brands, Amazon’s own grocery labels, and third party products where Amazon has enabled them.<\/p>\n

Whole Foods Market<\/strong> is a supermarket chain Amazon acquired in 2017. It operates as a retailer with its own buying organization, its own quality standards, and its own distribution arrangements. Amazon owns it. Amazon did not turn it into a marketplace.<\/p>\n

That last sentence is the one to sit with. There is no Seller Central tab for Whole Foods. You do not list a product there. Getting into Amazon Fresh<\/h2>\n

This is the closer of the two to what you already do, though it is not simply switching a listing on. I’d budget several weeks for approval alone.<\/p>\n

Selling grocery on Amazon generally requires category approval<\/strong>, and grocery is a gated category. Amazon wants documentation showing your supply chain, your compliance with food safety requirements, and appropriate labeling. Beyond approval, three things change relative to standard FBA:<\/p>\n

Expiry dating governs everything.<\/strong> Amazon applies shelf life requirements to consumable goods, and stock arriving too close to expiry gets refused or disposed of. Plan production and shipping around that window rather than discovering it at receiving. I’ve found this catches first time grocery sellers more often than any other rule.<\/p>\n

Storage and handling differ.<\/strong> Temperature controlled goods have their own requirements and their own costs. I would not model grocery fulfillment on your existing FBA numbers, because in my experience the per unit figure lands nowhere near it.<\/p>\n

Velocity is the whole game.<\/strong> Grocery margins are thin and the products expire. Slow movers are worse than unprofitable here, they are a write off. Program availability and requirements change, so confirm the current position in Seller Central rather than working from any article, this one included. I’d take the category approval requirements as the starting point and ask Seller Support what Fresh participation looks like for your specific products.<\/p>\n

Getting into Whole Foods<\/h2>\n

Different world entirely. This is traditional grocery retail and it runs on traditional grocery retail rules.<\/p>\n

Quality standards come first.<\/strong> Whole Foods maintains a published list of well over 100 ingredients it will not sell, and it is long. Products containing them are not negotiable exceptions, they are simply not stocked. Read the standards before you build a pitch, because a formulation problem is not something a good meeting fixes. We tested this assumption once on a client’s behalf and lost a quarter finding out.<\/p>\n

You pitch a buyer.<\/strong> Whole Foods buys regionally as well as nationally, and smaller brands typically start local. I’d start there rather than aiming at a national listing. There is a route for local and emerging producers that is genuinely more accessible than the national buying process, and starting there is the realistic path for most brands.<\/p>\n

You need distribution.<\/strong> Getting product from your facility to individual stores generally runs through a grocery distributor rather than direct shipping. That relationship is its own negotiation with its own margin implications.<\/p>\n

The economics invert.<\/strong> On Amazon you set a retail price and pay a referral fee. In grocery retail you sell at wholesale, the retailer sets the shelf price, and you may also be asked to fund promotions, demos, or placement. Model your wholesale margin separately. A product that is comfortable on Amazon can be unviable at wholesale, and I have watched brands discover that after the purchase order rather than before.<\/p>\n
