Below, what to do with it instead.

Amazon’s five free lists, and what each is actually for

List

Shows

Best used for

Best Sellers

Current top sellers per category

Understanding a category’s price and format norms

Movers & Shakers

Biggest rank gains in 24 hours

Spotting momentum before it is obvious

New Releases

Recently launched top performers

Seeing whether new entrants can break in

Most Wished For

Added to wish lists, not bought

Demand that has not converted, often on price

Gift Ideas

Popular as gifts

Seasonality and bundling ideas

Movers & Shakers is the one worth your time. Best Sellers tells you who already won. Movers & Shakers
tells you what is moving right now, and in our experience it is the single most useful free surface Amazon
publishes for anybody sourcing.

Most Wished For is the most misread. Something wished for and not bought is frequently a price problem
rather than an opportunity, and I’d treat it as a question rather than a signal.

How to read BSR without fooling yourself

Five rules. The first two prevent most errors.

BSR is a rank rather than a volume. Rank 1 outsells rank 2. By how much is never stated, and the gap
between rank 1 and 100 is enormous while the gap between 50,000 and 50,100 is negligible. I’d hold that firmly.

BSR is per category, and categories nest. A product can hold a strong rank in a narrow subcategory and
a weak one in its parent. Always read which category the rank refers to, because the flattering number
is usually the narrow one.

BSR is weighted toward recent sales. It reacts quickly, meaning a single promotional day can elevate a rank
temporarily. Check twice. Ideally a week apart, and in our experience once is how sellers get misled.

BSR reveals nothing about margin. A product selling constantly at a price leaving nothing behind is a busy way
to lose money, and no list will warn you.

BSR says nothing about whether you could compete. A top seller with thousands of reviews is a rank you
can observe and a position you cannot take. I’d read review count alongside rank, always.

The free research sequence I would actually use

Six steps. Roughly an hour. No subscription anywhere.

Browse Movers & Shakers in categories you understand. Not the ones with the biggest numbers, the ones
where you know what a good product looks like.

Note the price band and the format, not just the product. Categories have norms, and a product priced
outside the norm needs a visible reason.

Read the top listings’ reviews for complaints. Recurring complaints in a well-selling product are the
clearest product opportunity available for free. This is where the actual finding usually is, and
nobody does it because it is slow.

Mine autocomplete with your seed term plus each letter of the alphabet, to see how shoppers phrase
it.

Check demand rank in Brand Analytics if you have Brand Registry. Our guide to
Amazon Search Frequency Rank covers reading it, and
remember rank 1 is the most searched term.

Use the Amazon Seller app to check fees on any candidate before getting attached to it. Scan the
barcode, read the fee estimate, and see what margin actually survives.

Step 3 is the one I’d insist on. Anybody can see what sells. Reading why buyers are dissatisfied with
what sells is where a differentiated product comes from, and in our experience it takes an afternoon rather
than a tool.

A worked example of step 3, which is where the value is

Reading reviews for complaints sounds vague. So here is the method, on one category.

Pick the top 5 listings in a category you understand. Not the whole page. Five is enough and it keeps
this to an afternoon.

Filter each to 3-star and 1-star reviews. Three-star reviews are the most useful reviews on Amazon,
because the buyer neither loves nor hates the product and therefore describes it accurately. In our
experience nobody reads them, which is precisely why they are worth reading.

Write down every recurring complaint verbatim. Not paraphrased. The buyer’s words are the words other
buyers search with, and they are frequently words no seller has put in a listing.

Now count. If the same complaint appears across 4 of the 5 top listings, that is not a product defect.
That is a category-wide gap, and it is the closest thing to a validated product opportunity that free
research produces.

Then ask whether you can fix it. Some complaints are fixable with a different supplier or a design
change. Others are inherent to the format and category, and I’d distinguish the two honestly before
sourcing anything.

One example of the pattern. A category where every top listing’s reviews mention the same fitting
problem tells you two things at once: there is demand, and nobody has solved it. That combination is rarer
than it sounds and it costs nothing to find.

Why the best sellers list is a trap taken literally

The uncomfortable part. It also saves money.

A top seller is a saturated listing. Thousands of reviews, an entrenched incumbent, and advertising
costs dictated by whoever is most committed. Entering there means competing on price against somebody whose
economics are better than yours, which I’d call an unwinnable opening.

You cannot purchase your way past review count. It accrues with sales, and sales demand visibility which
reviews unlock. A closed loop, favoring whoever began earlier.

What the list is genuinely for: learning a category’s price norms, packaging conventions, image
standards, and what buyers complain about. Reconnaissance, not a shopping list, and I’d read it in that
spirit.

Where the opportunity actually sits is one step sideways. The underserved variant, the size nobody
stocks, the version that fixes the complaint appearing in every top listing’s reviews.

One thing the lists reveal that nobody looks for

A closing observation, because it is genuinely free and almost nobody uses it.

Watch what leaves the list. A product holding a top rank for months and then falling away steadily is
telling you something: demand softened, a competitor undercut it, or quality complaints accumulated until
conversion collapsed. Any of those three is useful intelligence, and I’d check a category’s list twice a
quarter partly to see who disappeared.

Departures are more informative than arrivals. An arrival could be a promotion, a seasonal spike, or a
launch push nobody can sustain. A sustained departure usually reflects something structural, and in our
experience that structural thing is frequently repeatable.

One practical use. If a well-reviewed product has quietly fallen out of the top ranks and its recent
reviews all mention the same new fault, that category has an opening its incumbent just vacated. Cheaper to
notice than to research.

What free will not give you

Four limits. All honest.

Estimated sales volume. Amazon publishes ranks, never units. Every unit estimate you have encountered was
inferred by somebody, and I’d treat the confidence of the figure as unrelated to its accuracy.

Historical trend. The lists are current. Tracking how a rank moved over months needs a tool or your own
spreadsheet kept diligently.

Bulk analysis. Assessing 400 candidates requires software. Assessing 20 properly does not. I’d rather you did the 20.

Competitor keyword lists. Amazon offers nothing here. Our guide to
finding competitors’ ranked keywords
covers what is possible free and where paid tools genuinely help. They update frequently and they are the same underlying data paid tools build on. Movers & Shakers is
the most useful, since it shows what is gaining rank now rather than what already won.

What does Best Sellers Rank actually mean?

A rank within a category based on recent sales, not a sales volume. Rank 1 sells more than rank 2, but the
gap is unstated, and because categories nest, the same product can hold a strong rank in a narrow
subcategory and a weak one in its parent. Always check which category the rank refers to.

Should I sell what is on the Amazon best sellers list?

Usually not directly. A top seller is a saturated listing with an entrenched incumbent, thousands of
reviews, and advertising costs set by the most committed bidder. Use the list to learn category norms and
buyer complaints, then find the underserved variant.

What is Movers & Shakers on Amazon?

A free list of products with the biggest rank gains over the previous 24 hours. It surfaces momentum before
it becomes obvious, which makes it more useful for sourcing than the Best Sellers list showing who has
already won.

Is Most Wished For a good source of product ideas?

Treat it with caution. Items added to wish lists but not bought frequently indicate a price objection rather
than unmet demand, so read it as a question about pricing rather than as a signal to source.

What can free research not tell me?

Estimated unit sales, since Amazon publishes ranks rather than volumes and every estimate is inferred.
Historical rank trends without your own tracking. Bulk analysis across hundreds of candidates. And
competitor keyword lists, where Amazon offers nothing at all.

Last updated: September 1, 2026.
