\nand unremarkable in another, because BSR is a rank within a category rather than a volume. Comparing a
\nrank across categories is meaningless,<\/strong> and that single misreading causes most of the bad sourcing
\ndecisions this page exists to prevent.<\/p>\n

And a warning worth stating early: the best sellers list is a list of things you probably should not

\nrather than an opportunity, and I’d treat it as a question rather than a signal.<\/p>\n

How to read BSR without fooling yourself<\/h2>\n

Five rules. The first two prevent most errors.<\/p>\n

BSR is a rank rather than a volume.<\/strong> Rank 1 outsells rank 2. By how much is never stated, and the gap
\nbetween rank 1 and 100 is enormous while the gap between 50,000 and 50,100 is negligible. I’d hold that firmly.<\/p>\n

BSR is per category, and categories nest.<\/strong> A product can hold a strong rank in a narrow subcategory and
\na weak one in its parent. Always read which category the rank refers to,<\/strong> because the flattering number
\nis usually the narrow one.<\/p>\n

BSR is weighted toward recent sales.<\/strong> It reacts quickly, meaning a single promotional day can elevate a rank
\ntemporarily. Check twice. Ideally a week apart, and in our experience once is how sellers get misled.<\/p>\n

BSR reveals nothing about margin.<\/strong> A product selling constantly at a price leaving nothing behind is a busy way
\nto lose money, and no list will warn you.<\/p>\n

BSR says nothing about whether you could compete.<\/strong> A top seller with thousands of reviews is a rank you
\ncan observe and a position you cannot take. I’d read review count alongside rank, always.<\/p>\n

The free research sequence I would actually use<\/h2>\n

Six steps. Roughly an hour. No subscription anywhere.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Browse Movers & Shakers in categories you understand.<\/strong> Not the ones with the biggest numbers, the ones
    \n where you know what a good product looks like.<\/li>\n
  2. Note the price band and the format<\/strong>, not just the product. Categories have norms, and a product priced
    \n outside the norm needs a visible reason.<\/li>\n
  3. Read the top listings’ reviews for complaints.<\/strong> Recurring complaints in a well-selling product are the
    \n clearest product opportunity available for free. This is where the actual finding usually is,<\/strong> and
    \n nobody does it because it is slow.<\/li>\n
  4. Mine autocomplete<\/strong> with your seed term plus each letter of the alphabet, to see how shoppers phrase
    \n it.<\/li>\n
  5. Check demand rank in Brand Analytics<\/strong> if you have Brand Registry. Our guide to

  6. Use the Amazon Seller app to check fees<\/strong> on any candidate before getting attached to it. Scan the
    \n barcode, read the fee estimate, and see what margin actually survives.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Step 3 is the one I’d insist on.<\/strong> Anybody can see what sells. Reading why buyers are dissatisfied with
    \nwhat sells is where a differentiated product comes from, and in our experience it takes an afternoon rather
    \nthan a tool.<\/p>\n

    A worked example of step 3, which is where the value is<\/h2>\n

    Reading reviews for complaints sounds vague. So here is the method, on one category.<\/p>\n

    Pick the top 5 listings in a category you understand.<\/strong> Not the whole page. Five is enough and it keeps
    \nthis to an afternoon.<\/p>\n

    Filter each to 3-star and 1-star reviews.<\/strong> Three-star reviews are the most useful reviews on Amazon,
    \nbecause the buyer neither loves nor hates the product and therefore describes it accurately. In our
    \nexperience nobody reads them,<\/strong> which is precisely why they are worth reading.<\/p>\n

    Write down every recurring complaint verbatim.<\/strong> Not paraphrased. The buyer’s words are the words other
    \nbuyers search with, and they are frequently words no seller has put in a listing.<\/p>\n

    Now count.<\/strong> If the same complaint appears across 4 of the 5 top listings, that is not a product defect.
    \nThat is a category-wide gap, and it is the closest thing to a validated product opportunity that free
    \nresearch produces.<\/p>\n

    Then ask whether you can fix it.<\/strong> Some complaints are fixable with a different supplier or a design
    \nchange. Others are inherent to the format and category, and I’d distinguish the two honestly before
    \nsourcing anything.<\/p>\n

    One example of the pattern.<\/strong> A category where every top listing’s reviews mention the same fitting
    \nproblem tells you two things at once: there is demand, and nobody has solved it. That combination is rarer
    \nthan it sounds and it costs nothing to find.<\/p>\n

    Why the best sellers list is a trap taken literally<\/h2>\n

    The uncomfortable part. It also saves money.<\/p>\n

    A top seller is a saturated listing.<\/strong> Thousands of reviews, an entrenched incumbent, and advertising
    \ncosts dictated by whoever is most committed. Entering there means competing on price against somebody whose
    \neconomics are better than yours, which I’d call an unwinnable opening.<\/p>\n

    You cannot purchase your way past review count.<\/strong> It accrues with sales, and sales demand visibility which
    \nreviews unlock. A closed loop, favoring whoever began earlier.<\/p>\n

    What the list is genuinely for:<\/strong> learning a category’s price norms, packaging conventions, image
    \nstandards, and what buyers complain about. Reconnaissance, not a shopping list,<\/strong> and I’d read it in that
    \nspirit.<\/p>\n

    Where the opportunity actually sits<\/strong> is one step sideways. The underserved variant, the size nobody
    \nstocks, the version that fixes the complaint appearing in every top listing’s reviews.<\/p>\n

    One thing the lists reveal that nobody looks for<\/h2>\n

    A closing observation, because it is genuinely free and almost nobody uses it.<\/p>\n

    Watch what leaves the list.<\/strong> A product holding a top rank for months and then falling away steadily is
    \ntelling you something: demand softened, a competitor undercut it, or quality complaints accumulated until
    \nconversion collapsed. Any of those three is useful intelligence<\/strong>, and I’d check a category’s list twice a
    \nquarter partly to see who disappeared.<\/p>\n

    Departures are more informative than arrivals.<\/strong> An arrival could be a promotion, a seasonal spike, or a
    \nlaunch push nobody can sustain. A sustained departure usually reflects something structural, and in our
    \nexperience that structural thing is frequently repeatable.<\/p>\n

    One practical use.<\/strong> If a well-reviewed product has quietly fallen out of the top ranks and its recent
    \nreviews all mention the same new fault, that category has an opening its incumbent just vacated. Cheaper to
    \nnotice than to research.<\/p>\n

    What free will not give you<\/h2>\n

    Four limits. All honest.<\/p>\n

    Estimated sales volume.<\/strong> Amazon publishes ranks, never units. Every unit estimate you have encountered was
    \ninferred by somebody, and I’d treat the confidence of the figure as unrelated to its accuracy.<\/p>\n

    Historical trend.<\/strong> The lists are current. Tracking how a rank moved over months needs a tool or your own
    \nspreadsheet kept diligently.<\/p>\n

    Bulk analysis.<\/strong> Assessing 400 candidates requires software. Assessing 20 properly does not. I’d rather you did the 20.<\/p>\n
