Amazon’s Manage Your Experiments tool splits listing content, meaning A+ modules, main images and titles, and it is only available to Brand Registry sellers. It does not test ads.

So A/B testing for Amazon PPC means running two campaigns deliberately and patiently, changing exactly one thing between them, and comparing the results yourself. That is entirely workable. It is just manual, and the manual part is where most tests go wrong.

I’d start by naming the thing most sellers get wrong: they change several variables, run for a week, and declare a winner on 40 clicks. That is not a test. It is a coin flip with a spreadsheet attached.

What you can actually test

Variable

Testable?

How

Bid amount

Yes

Duplicate campaign, one bid level different

Match type

Yes

Same keywords, exact against phrase or broad

Campaign structure

Yes

Single-keyword campaigns against grouped ad groups

Placement modifiers

Yes

Different top-of-search multipliers

Targeting type

Yes

Keyword targeting against product targeting

Ad creative (Sponsored Brands)

Yes

Two headlines, two image sets

Landing page (Sponsored Brands)

Yes

Store page against custom landing page

Listing images or title

Not through ads

Use Manage Your Experiments instead

Price

Poorly

Too many confounds. Test separately

The line worth drawing: ads test the ad, the listing tests the listing. Running two ad campaigns to work out whether a new main image converts better is the wrong instrument, because the image change affects organic traffic at the same time and you cannot separate the two.

The rules that make a test valid

Five of them, and I’d treat breaking any one as invalidating the result.

One variable. If campaign B has a higher bid and a different match type, a win tells you nothing about which change caused it. This is the rule broken most often, usually because a seller is impatient and wants to test two ideas at once.

Same time window. Run both simultaneously, not one after the other. Amazon demand moves week to week, and sequential tests measure the calendar as much as the change.

Enough conversions, not clicks. This is where most tests fail. You need enough orders in each arm for the difference to mean anything, and on a typical listing that means running for weeks rather than days.

No mid-test changes. No adjusting bids because one arm looks bad on day three. That is the day the test is most likely to be misleading.

Written down first. Decide before you start what result would make you act, and what difference is big enough to count. In our experience a test without a stated decision rule becomes an argument about interpretation rather than an answer.

How much data you actually need

This is the uncomfortable part, and I’d rather be honest about it than encouraging.

To detect a modest difference in conversion rate between two arms, you need a meaningful number of conversions in each, not a meaningful number of clicks. A campaign producing 10 orders a week takes a long time to produce a trustworthy comparison.

The practical implication: most small sellers cannot run statistically valid PPC tests on most of their products. There are not enough orders. That is not a failure of method, it is arithmetic.

What to do instead, if that is you:

Test on your highest-volume product only, where the data exists.

Test bigger differences rather than small ones. A 20% bid change resolves faster than a 5% one because the effect is larger relative to the noise.

Accept directional answers rather than confident ones, and revisit them later.

Prefer structural tests, such as campaign architecture, which show their effect in cost and impression share rather than only in conversion rate.

I’ve found that last point genuinely useful. Some questions can be answered on cheaper metrics. Whether single-keyword campaigns give you better control shows up in cost per click and impression share long before it shows up in orders.

A test that is worth running

If you run one test, I’d make it this one: top-of-search placement modifier.

Duplicate a campaign that is already performing acceptably. In the copy, raise the top-of-search modifier substantially. Leave everything else identical, run both for several weeks, and compare cost per order rather than ACoS.

The reason this test is worth the effort is that placement is one of the few levers where the right answer varies genuinely by product rather than following a general rule. Some products convert dramatically better at the top of search and justify paying for it. Others do not, and the premium is wasted. There is no way to know which yours is without measuring.

Compare on cost per order, not ACoS, because ACoS moves with price and will mislead you if anything else shifted.

A worked example of A/B testing for Amazon PPC

Abstract rules are easy to agree with and hard to apply, so here is the shape of a real test.

Say you want to know whether single-keyword campaigns beat grouped ad groups on your main product. That is a structural question, which is good, because structural effects show up in cheaper metrics than conversion rate.

Build campaign A as one ad group containing your twelve main keywords. Build campaign B as twelve campaigns, one keyword each, same keywords, same starting bids, same budget in total. Launch both on the same day.

Now the discipline. Do not adjust anything for three weeks. Not the bids, not the budgets, not the negative keywords. I’ve found this is the hardest part, because campaign B will look chaotic in week one and the instinct to intervene is strong. Intervening ends the test.

At the end, compare three things. Total spend, which tells you whether the structure cost more to run. Impression share on the keywords that matter, which tells you whether the control was worth it. And cost per order, which is the answer if you have enough orders to trust it.

The reason I’d pick this test for a first attempt is that it produces a usable answer even when order volume is too low for statistical confidence. Spend and impression share resolve quickly, and both are genuinely informative about whether the structure suits your account.

What would make me act on the result: a difference in cost per order large enough to notice without arithmetic, or a clear impression-share gain on the keywords that drive the product. What would not: a two percent difference either way, which in our experience is noise and nothing else.

Reading the result honestly

Two failure modes at the end of a test. Both common, and I’ve made the first one myself.

Declaring a winner on a small difference. If arm A returns a cost per order of $12.40 and arm B returns $12.10, that is not a result. That is noise wearing a decimal point. I’d require a difference large enough that you would have noticed it without the spreadsheet.

Ignoring a null result. A test that shows no difference is a real finding and a useful one: it tells you this lever does not matter for this product, and you can stop thinking about it. Sellers treat null results as failed tests and re-run them hoping for a different answer, which is how you eventually find a false positive.

There is a third thing worth watching for. If one arm won because it happened to run during a spike, the result will not repeat. When a test produces a surprising win, I’d re-run it before rebuilding the account around it.

Where this fits with everything else

In our experience PPC testing is worth doing after the fundamentals are right, never before.

If the listing converts badly, no bid structure fixes that, and the test will simply tell you which way of losing money is marginally slower. Conversion rate is the dominant factor in both ads and organic ranking, which our guide to Amazon product ranking factors sets out in order of weight.

And if performance has recently dropped rather than always been weak, testing is the wrong response entirely. Diagnose first, using the sequence in Amazon product ranking dropped, because a stockout or a lost Buy Box will not be fixed by a bid experiment.

FAQ

Does Amazon have an A/B testing tool for PPC?

No. Manage Your Experiments splits listing content such as A+ modules, main images and titles, and is limited to Brand Registry sellers. There is no built-in split test for advertising, so PPC testing means running two campaigns yourself and comparing the results manually.

What can I A/B test in Amazon PPC?

Bid amount, match type, campaign structure, placement modifiers, targeting type, and for Sponsored Brands the creative and landing page. Listing images and titles should be tested through Manage Your Experiments instead, since ad tests cannot separate their effect from organic traffic.

How long should an Amazon PPC test run?

Long enough to accumulate meaningful orders in each arm, which usually means weeks rather than days. The threshold is conversions, not clicks, so a campaign producing few orders per week needs correspondingly longer before the comparison means anything.

How many conversions do I need for a valid PPC test?

Enough that a real difference would stand out from normal week-to-week variation, which for modest effects is more than most small sellers generate. If your product produces only a handful of orders weekly, test larger changes, use your highest-volume product, and accept directional rather than confident answers.

Can I test two changes at once in Amazon PPC?

Not if you want to know which one worked. With two variables changed, a win tells you the combination beat the original but not which element caused it. Run them sequentially as separate single-variable tests instead.

What is the best Amazon PPC test to start with?

The top-of-search placement modifier. Duplicate a working campaign, raise the modifier substantially in the copy, change nothing else, and compare cost per order over several weeks. Placement is one of the few levers where the correct answer genuinely differs by product.

Last updated: September 12, 2026.
