Brand Approval is
permission for somebody selling a brand they do not own.

They are not competing options, and most articles present them as though they were. If you
manufacture or private-label, you want Registry. If you resell somebody else’s product into a gated
category, you need Approval. If you do both, you need both, and that is common rather than unusual.

The single most useful thing to know before starting either: Registry turns on a trademark, and
Approval turns on supplier invoices. Those are the two documents that decide everything, and both take
longer to obtain than sellers plan for.

The comparison, in one table

Brand Registry

Brand Approval

Who it is for

The brand owner

A reseller of somebody else’s brand

What it turns on

A registered trademark

Supplier invoices and authorization

Who grants it

Amazon, against a trademark office record

Amazon, against your paperwork

Cost to apply

Free (the trademark is not)

Free

Scope

The brand, across enrolled marketplaces

Per brand, and per category

What you get

Listing control, A+ Content, Stores, Sponsored Brands, Brand Analytics, violation reporting

The ability to list at all

Typical wait

Days, once the trademark exists

Days to weeks

The real bottleneck

Getting the trademark, which can take months

Getting invoices Amazon accepts

Read the last row twice. Both programs are fast. Both prerequisites are slow. In our experience that
mismatch is where every plan goes wrong, and I’d build the timeline backwards from the trademark.

What Brand Registry actually is

Amazon’s enrollment program for trademark owners, and the gateway to nearly every brand tool on the
platform.

It requires a trademark you own. A text mark, or an image mark containing words, letters, or numbers,
registered with a trademark office Amazon recognizes. I’d confirm yours is on that list before filing anything.

Pending applications can qualify through IP Accelerator. This is the part sellers most often do not
know: Amazon’s IP Accelerator connects you to vetted law firms, and filing through one can get you into
Brand Registry while the trademark is still pending. If you are waiting on a trademark, look at this
before waiting another six months. I’d check it first.

Enrollment itself is free. The trademark is the cost, and in our experience sellers budget for the filing and forget the attorney.

What you get is the whole brand toolkit: A+ Content, Amazon Stores, Sponsored Brands, Brand Analytics,
the ability to report violations, control over your own detail pages, and the authority to fix catalog
structure on your own ASINs.

On effectiveness, we quote no percentage. An earlier version of this page claimed a specific reduction
in infringements and a specific share of sellers reporting higher sales after enrolling. Neither figure was
something we could stand behind, so both are gone. What is not in dispute: without Registry you have
almost no enforcement mechanism, and that is the argument.

What Brand Approval actually is

Permission to list, granted per brand and per category. Sellers also call it ungating.

It exists because some categories and brands are restricted. Jewelry, watches, certain automotive
parts, some apparel brands, and a rotating list of others. The list changes, so check rather than
assume. I’ve found sellers relying on a list they read a year ago.

What Amazon asks for: invoices from the manufacturer or an authorized distributor, images of packaging
and labels, and evidence the goods are genuine and properly sourced.

The invoice requirements are specific, and this is where applications die. Recently dated, issued by
the supplier, showing both parties’ details, listing exact products and quantities, usually covering a
minimum unit count. Retail receipts do not work. Neither do quotes or order confirmations. Our guide to
finding wholesalers for your ecommerce business
covers getting paperwork that passes.

It is granted per category. Approved for a brand in one category does not carry into another, which
surprises sellers mid-expansion. When I have seen an expansion stall, this was frequently why.

How the two programs affect what you can do on a listing

Concrete, because the abstract benefit lists are interchangeable and tell you nothing.

With Registry, on your own ASIN, you can: replace a title somebody else wrote, add A+ Content below
the fold, run Sponsored Brands with a headline and custom image, open Brand Analytics, and report a
violation on a competitor’s listing. Five distinct capabilities, and 4 of them are unavailable any other
way.

Without Registry, on your own ASIN, you can: submit changes and hope the catalog accepts them. In our
experience that is the single most frustrating position a brand can occupy, and it is why enrollment is
worth the trademark cost.

With Approval, on somebody else’s ASIN, you can: add your offer and compete on price and fulfillment.
That is the whole of it. You do not control the title, the images, or the bullets, and I’d set expectations
accordingly before buying inventory.

Without Approval, on a gated ASIN, you can: do nothing. The listing button is simply unavailable to
you.

One consequence worth planning around. A reseller’s margin on a shared ASIN is decided by whoever is
most desperate that week, because price and fulfillment are the only levers. Our guide to
improving your product detail page covers
what you control when the listing is genuinely yours, which on a shared ASIN is almost nothing.

Costs, plainly

Three numbers, and only one of them is Amazon’s.

Registry enrollment: free. Amazon charges nothing.

The trademark: not free, and the figure varies by country, by number of classes, and by whether you
use an attorney. Check your national trademark office’s current fee schedule rather than any figure in an
article, including this one.

Brand Approval: generally free, though a small number of categories carry their own fees. I’d verify
for your specific category rather than assume.

The cost people forget is time. A trademark can take many months. Invoices that satisfy Amazon can
take a supplier relationship you do not yet have. When I have seen a launch slip by a quarter, one of
those two was the reason.

How to tell which one you need

Four situations. One of them is yours.

You made it, or you had it made under your own name. Brand Registry. Get the trademark filed, look at
IP Accelerator, and enroll. I’d do all 3 in that order.

You buy somebody else’s branded product and resell it. Brand Approval, if the brand or category is
gated. Check gating before you buy inventory, by attempting to create the listing in Seller Central.
Ten minutes, and it prevents owning stock you cannot sell.

You do both, which is extremely common. Registry for your own line, Approval for the brands you
resell. They coexist without conflict, and in our experience hybrid sellers assume wrongly that one blocks the other.

You are not sure whether your product counts as your brand. If your name is on the product and the
packaging, and you can register it as a trademark, it is your brand. If you are putting a sticker on a
generic item, that is a harder conversation and I’d have it with an attorney before filing.

Why applications fail

Five causes. The first two account for most of it.

Registry: no registered trademark, and no pending application filed through IP Accelerator. There is
no route around this requirement.

Approval: invoices that do not meet the format. Genuine product, unusable paperwork. When I have seen
wholesale plans collapse, this was almost always the reason.

Registry: the mark on the product does not match the mark on the application. Capitalization, spacing,
or a logo variant. Amazon checks, and I’d photograph the product before submitting to be sure.

Approval: a supplier who will not be contacted. Amazon sometimes verifies. A supplier who declines to
be named ends the application.

Either: applying in the wrong marketplace. Trademarks are territorial and Approval is per marketplace.
I’d confirm which storefront you are actually applying for. In my experience this catches sellers expanding into a second country.

What each one does not do

Worth stating, because both are oversold.

Registry does not remove counterfeiters automatically. It gives you tools and a reporting channel. You
still have to use them, and in our experience brands enroll and then never open Report a Violation.

Registry is not a trademark. It is Amazon recognizing one you already hold. It confers no legal rights
off Amazon, and I’d be careful how that is described to investors or partners.

Approval does not make you an authorized seller in the brand’s eyes. Amazon permitting you to list is
not the brand permitting you to sell. A brand can still complain, and our guide to
appealing an Amazon policy violation covers
what that costs to resolve.

Approval does not cover every product in the category. Individual items can still require additional
permissions, which in our experience is discovered one ASIN at a time.

A sequence I would follow

Decide which side of the line you are on. Owner or reseller. Ten seconds. Everything else follows from it.

If owner: file the trademark now, and check IP Accelerator before accepting a long wait.

If reseller: check gating before buying, by attempting the listing.

If reseller: confirm the invoice format with your supplier in writing as a condition of the first
purchase order, not a hope.

Enroll or apply, then expect days rather than weeks for the decision itself.

If owner, actually use the tools. A+ Content, Brand Analytics, and violation reporting are the
return on the whole exercise. Our guide to
Amazon Brand Registry covers the enrollment detail.

If you would rather have enrollment, ungating, and the listing work handled together, that sits inside our
account management service. Which you need is decided by whether you own the brand, not by preference.

Can I enroll in Brand Registry without a trademark?

Not with nothing at all. You need a registered trademark, or a pending application filed through Amazon’s
IP Accelerator, which connects you to vetted law firms and can get you enrolled while registration is
still in progress.

Do I need both Brand Registry and Brand Approval?

If you sell your own brand and also resell other brands in gated categories, yes, and that combination is
common. Registry covers your own line; Approval covers each third-party brand and category separately.

What documents does Brand Approval require?

Invoices from the manufacturer or an authorized distributor, recently dated and showing both parties’
details with exact products and quantities, plus images of packaging and labels. Retail receipts, quotes,
and order confirmations are not accepted.

How long does Brand Registry take?

The enrollment decision itself usually takes a few business days once you have a qualifying trademark. The
trademark is the slow part and can take months, which is why IP Accelerator exists.

Does Brand Registry stop counterfeiters?

Not on its own. It provides listing control and a violation reporting channel that you have to actively
use. Many enrolled brands never open the reporting tools, which is why they see less benefit than they
expected.

Last updated: August 31, 2026. Amazon’s Brand Registry eligibility, IP Accelerator availability, gated
categories, and ungating documentation requirements change over time and differ by marketplace; Seller
Central carries the current rules for your account. This page is general information, not legal advice.
