It is a Hampton Roads code, and<br \/>\n  we would rather say so than publish an address we cannot support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>RIC and ORF are the airport codes for Richmond and Norfolk, which is a reliable way to tell which of<br \/>\nVirginia&#8217;s three regions a code belongs to.<\/p>\n<h2>Three regions, three purposes<\/h2>\n<p>Chesterfield County leads, with Fairfax, Chesapeake City, and Suffolk City close behind, then<br \/>\nLoudoun. By town, Richmond holds the most, followed by Springfield, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Sterling, and<br \/>\nClear Brook.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Richmond and Chesterfield are the distribution core.<\/strong> The city sits on I-95 roughly halfway<br \/>\nbetween Washington and the Carolinas, about 110 miles south of Washington and around 90 miles from<br \/>\nHampton Roads, which makes it a natural staging point for the whole mid-Atlantic. A truck leaving<br \/>\nRichmond reaches Baltimore in about 3 hours and Raleigh in about 3 hours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hampton Roads is about the water.<\/strong> Norfolk, Suffolk, and Chesapeake sit around one of the deepest<br \/>\nnatural harbors on the east coast, and the Port of Virginia is a major container terminal. The ORF<br \/>\ncodes in your tracking refer to that region, ORF being Norfolk&#8217;s airport code.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Northern Virginia is a market, not a hub.<\/strong> Fairfax, Loudoun, and Sterling serve the Washington<br \/>\nmetropolitan area, which is dense, wealthy, and short of warehouse land. Sterling sits roughly 30<br \/>\nmiles from central Washington, which is about as close as large-format warehousing gets. Clear Brook, out near<br \/>\nWinchester on I-81, is a different thing again, sitting on the same corridor as the Pennsylvania<br \/>\ndistribution sites.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d read the region before reading anything else into a Virginia code. In our experience the three do<br \/>\nnot substitute for each other, and a parcel that appears to have travelled oddly has usually just<br \/>\ncrossed between them.<\/p>\n<h2>What it means when your parcel is at one of these<\/h2>\n<p>The facility type tells you roughly how far along your parcel is, and I&#8217;d argue that is the<br \/>\nsingle most useful thing on this page after the addresses themselves.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>fulfillment center<\/strong> holds inventory, so a parcel there has usually not been packed for you yet.<br \/>\nA <strong>sortation center<\/strong> handles parcels that are already packed, grouping them by destination region.<br \/>\nA <strong>delivery station<\/strong> is the last building your parcel sees before it goes onto a van, which means<br \/>\nit is close to you and close to arriving. One pattern does hold up<br \/>\nreasonably well: a leading D usually means a delivery station. That happens often, and I&#8217;d read it as unremarkable. The<br \/>\npossibilities are few.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The building sits in a neighboring state.<\/strong> The single most common answer. Parcel networks are<br \/>\nbuilt around drive times rather than state lines, and in our experience a cross-border scan worries<br \/>\npeople who have no reason to be worried.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The site is newer than this page.<\/strong> Amazon commissions buildings faster than any list is updated,<br \/>\nso recent codes are frequently absent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is not an Amazon code at all.<\/strong> Contracted delivery partners and third-party logistics providers<br \/>\nrun their own identifiers, which look similar and are not the same thing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A character was misread somewhere.<\/strong> Zero versus O, one versus I, five versus S. When I have run<br \/>\ndown a code that seemed impossible, a misread character was often the whole story.<\/p>\n<p>Whichever applies, the sensible move is to wait for the next tracking update rather than to<br \/>\ninvestigate the address.<\/p>\n<h2>Other Amazon buildings you may see in tracking<\/h2>\n<p>Five other kinds of Amazon building turn up in tracking often enough to be worth naming, and<br \/>\nnone of them behave like the ones above.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Air hubs<\/strong> move freight between regions by aircraft rather than picking orders, which is why a<br \/>\nparcel can appear hundreds of miles from both its origin and its destination without anything having<br \/>\ngone wrong. <strong>Receive centers<\/strong>, sometimes labeled cross-docks, take bulk shipments from<br \/>\nmanufacturers and break them apart for distribution; nothing there is destined for a customer yet.<br \/>\n<strong>Amazon Warehousing and Distribution<\/strong> sites hold bulk stock upstream and replenish fulfillment<br \/>\ncenters automatically, which matters to importers and is largely unknown among smaller merchants.<br \/>\n<strong>Returns centers<\/strong> grade what customers send back. And <strong>third-party partner sites<\/strong> are buildings<br \/>\nAmazon uses without owning, which is why some addresses look nothing like a warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d not read too much into seeing one.
