Amazon UPC codes must come directly from GS1<\/strong>, the organization that issues barcodes worldwide. Amazon validates the barcode you enter against the GS1 database and checks whether the registered company name matches your brand. If it does not, the listing gets suppressed, sometimes months after it went live.<\/p>\n

That single rule explains almost every UPC problem I see, and I’d put it first in any Amazon setup checklist. The $5 barcodes sold in bulk online are real barcodes, legitimately issued years ago to a different company and resold. They scan fine. They fail Amazon’s check, because the company name attached to them is not yours.<\/p>\n

Why the cheap barcodes fail<\/h2>\n

Before 2016 nobody checked, and in my experience that history still causes most of the damage. A whole industry grew up reselling blocks of barcodes from companies that had bought large prefixes and no longer needed them, and thousands of Amazon listings were built on them.<\/p>\n

Amazon then started cross-referencing the GS1 database. The barcodes did not stop working immediately, which is what makes this dangerous. I’ve found sellers who used resold UPCs three years ago and only discovered the problem when a listing they depended on was suppressed with no warning and no obvious cause.<\/p>\n

When it happens, the fix is not simple. You have to buy a legitimate GTIN, then get Amazon to change the identifier on an existing listing, which is a support case rather than a settings change. Meanwhile the listing is down and its ranking is decaying.<\/p>\n

I’d treat this as the one place in Amazon setup where paying full price is unambiguously correct. The saving is a few hundred dollars. The exposure is your entire catalog.<\/p>\n

What GS1 actually costs<\/h2>\n

GS1<\/a> is a nonprofit and the only legitimate source. Registration comes in two shapes.<\/p>\n

A single GTIN<\/strong>, for sellers who need one or two barcodes. Roughly $30 as a one-time fee with no annual renewal, though this varies by country.<\/p>\n

A company prefix<\/strong>, which gives you a block of numbers to assign yourself. Initial fee plus an annual renewal, priced by how many GTINs you need. For a small catalog expect a low three-figure initial fee and a smaller annual one.<\/p>\n

Verify the current pricing at GS1’s own site<\/a> rather than trusting any figure here, including mine. They restructure the fee tiers periodically and country organizations price differently.<\/p>\n

The decision between them is straightforward arithmetic. Under about five products, buy single GTINs. Above that, or if you expect to add variations, take the prefix. In our experience sellers who buy singles and then expand end up with barcodes scattered across several registrations, which is administratively irritating rather than harmful, but avoidable.<\/p>\n

When you do not need a UPC at all<\/h2>\n

This is the part most guides skip, and it saves people money.<\/p>\n

You need a product identifier to create a new<\/strong> listing. You do not need one to sell on a listing that already exists. If you are doing wholesale, arbitrage, or anything where you add your offer to an existing ASIN, the barcode question does not arise. The listing already has one.<\/p>\n

And if you are creating a new listing but genuinely cannot get a barcode, Amazon has a GTIN exemption<\/strong> process. It applies to handmade goods, private label products sold without any barcode on the packaging, product bundles, parts with no manufacturer identifier, and a few category-specific cases.<\/p>\n

The exemption is applied for per brand and category in Seller Central<\/a>, and approval usually needs images of the product and packaging showing no barcode present. When I have run these for clients the common reason for rejection is packaging images that show a barcode the seller forgot was there, so check the box itself before applying.<\/p>\n

An exemption is not a shortcut around GS1. If your product will carry a barcode, get a real one. The exemption exists for products that genuinely have none.<\/p>\n

UPC, EAN, FNSKU and ASIN: what each one is<\/h2>\n

These get confused constantly, and when I explain them to a new seller the confusion usually turns out to be causing a real mistake already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The one worth understanding properly is FNSKU. When you send inventory to FBA, Amazon labels your units with an FNSKU rather than the UPC, and that label is what ties a physical unit in a warehouse to your seller account.<\/p>\n

This matters because of commingling. If you let Amazon use manufacturer barcodes instead of FNSKU labels, your inventory gets pooled with every other seller’s units of the same product. A customer buying from you might receive someone else’s stock, including a counterfeit, and the resulting complaint lands on your account.<\/p>\n

I’d label with FNSKU on everything, always. The per-unit labeling cost is trivial next to a counterfeit claim, and inauthentic-item complaints are among the hardest to appeal because you cannot prove the provenance of stock that was never yours. Getting the details right<\/h2>\n

A few things that cause avoidable rejections, all of which I’ve watched happen.<\/p>\n
