The different types of Amazon warehouses<\/strong> are nine distinct facility categories, each doing one
\njob in a chain that runs from a manufacturer’s pallet to your doorstep. The distinction that matters
\nmost is simple: only two of the nine ever hold seller inventory.<\/strong> Every other building in the
\nnetwork handles parcels or freight that were picked and packed somewhere else.<\/p>\n

That one line resolves most of the confusion people arrive with, whether they are tracking an order
\nor planning where to send stock. A state can hold 30 Amazon buildings and offer a seller 3 storage
\noptions. A parcel can sit for 6 hours in an enormous facility that was never going to open it.<\/p>\n

Fulfillment centers<\/h2>\n

The buildings people picture, and the only conventional ones that store seller stock.<\/p>\n

A fulfillment center receives inventory, stows it, picks it against customer orders, packs it, and
\nships it. They are large, they are heavily automated in newer sites, and they run continuously.<\/p>\n

The counterintuitive part is storage. Amazon deliberately does not group identical products
\ntogether.<\/strong> Stock is stowed into whatever location is nearby and convenient, so your units end up
\nscattered across a building. A picker walking a short distance for one item beats a picker walking to
\na dedicated shelf of the same thing. I’ve found this is the single fact that most changes how sellers

Sortation centers<\/h2>\n

A sortation center never opens a parcel. Everything arriving has already been picked and packed
\nelsewhere, and the building’s only job is grouping parcels by where they are going so they can travel
\nefficiently to the right region.<\/p>\n

This is the type most often mistaken for a fulfillment center, and the confusion has real
\nconsequences for sellers who count buildings in a state and assume they are all storage options.

For a shopper, a sortation center scan means the parcel exists, is packed, and is moving.<\/p>\n

Delivery stations<\/h2>\n

The last Amazon building your parcel sees.<\/p>\n

Delivery stations receive sorted parcels, arrange them by route, and load them onto vans, including
\nAmazon Flex vehicles. They are smaller than fulfillment centers, far more numerous, and located close
\nto the populations they serve, which is why urban areas hold so many of them.<\/p>\n

A delivery station scan is good news.<\/strong> In our experience it usually means delivery within a day,
\noccasionally two. Facility codes beginning with D are commonly delivery stations, which is the one
\nnaming pattern that holds up reasonably well.<\/p>\n

No seller inventory is ever stored here.<\/p>\n

Receive centers and cross-docks<\/h2>\n

Receive centers, sometimes called inbound cross-docks or IXD sites, take very large shipments direct
\nfrom manufacturers and break them into smaller consignments for distribution across fulfillment
\ncenters.<\/p>\n

Nothing in a receive center belongs to a customer yet. For a seller sending container quantities,
\nthis is frequently where the goods land first, and it is why inbound shipments occasionally show a
\ndestination that is not where the stock ends up.<\/p>\n

Air hubs<\/h2>\n

Air hubs move freight between regions by aircraft rather than picking any orders. Amazon’s own air
\nnetwork is anchored at Cincinnati\/Northern Kentucky Airport, with regional gateways elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Air hubs explain the tracking scan that makes no geographic sense. A parcel can appear hundreds of
\nmiles from both its origin and its destination because it is on an aircraft routing, not a truck
\nrouting. I’d not read anything into it.<\/p>\n

Grocery and fresh facilities<\/h2>\n

Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods sites are temperature-controlled and run on expiry dates rather than on
\nstorage duration. The operational logic is entirely different: stock rotates in days rather than
\nmonths, and a mistake spoils rather than merely ages.<\/p>\n

These are separate from the main FBA network, and most sellers never interact with them.<\/p>\n

Returns centers<\/h2>\n

Where returned merchandise is inspected and graded. Sellable units rejoin inventory. Unsellable ones
\nare returned to the seller, liquidated, destroyed, or graded and resold, depending on settings most
\nsellers have never opened.<\/p>\n

That grading decision is made quickly by a person handling hundreds of items, which is why packaging

Specialty and oversize sites<\/h2>\n

Furniture, appliances, mattresses, and heavy bulky goods are handled in dedicated facilities with
\ndifferent equipment, different handling, and a different fee structure. If your product is large, this
\nis the part of the network you are actually in, and the economics differ enough that it deserves its
\nown analysis rather than an assumption.<\/p>\n

Amazon Warehousing and Distribution<\/h2>\n

The type most sellers have never heard of, and the second one that holds your inventory.<\/p>\n

AWD is bulk upstream storage. You send container quantities there, and it replenishes fulfillment

\nquestion of where goods enter the country from the question of how much sits in fulfillment centers

How many warehouses does Amazon have?<\/h2>\n

The honest answer is that no exact public figure exists<\/strong>, and I’d be skeptical of any page that
\ngives one to the unit.<\/p>\n

Amazon does not publish a live facility count. Independent trackers put the North American total in
\nthe several hundreds across all types, and the number moves continually as buildings open, close,
\nconvert, and get relabeled. Counts that circulate online usually disagree because they include
\ndifferent facility types: a figure counting only fulfillment centers is a fraction of one that
\nincludes delivery stations.<\/p>\n

\ncheckable. Distribution centers are a particular source of confusion<\/strong>, because Amazon does not use
\nthat label consistently; many buildings described as distribution centers in third-party listings are
