A category determines which referral fee you pay, whether you need approval to list, and which browse and filter paths buyers use to find you. Picking the wrong one costs money on every sale and visibility on every search.

I’d start with the gating question. About two dozen categories require approval before you can list. The rest are open to any seller in good standing. Which list your product falls on is the first thing to check, before price, before sourcing, before anything.

Categories that commonly require approval

The list changes and it varies by marketplace, so treat this as the shape rather than the current state. Gating is also applied per seller account, so two sellers can see different restrictions on the same product.

Commonly restricted: Automotive and Powersports, Fine Art, Fine Jewelry, Watches, Collectible Coins, Grocery and Gourmet Food, Sexual Wellness, Streaming Media Players, Video and DVD, Postage Stamps, Subscription Boxes, and Services.

The pattern behind the list is worth learning, because it predicts the ones not on it. Amazon gates categories where authenticity or safety is hard to verify after the fact. Anything counterfeited often, anything that can hurt someone, anything where a bad actor can do lasting damage to buyer trust. I’ve found that heuristic is more reliable than any published list, since the lists go stale.

Approval is a documentation exercise rather than a judgment call, and our guide on getting ungated on Amazon covers exactly what Amazon wants to see. This page is about which category to be in; that one is about getting into it.

Restrictions that sit inside open categories

This catches people who checked the category and thought they were clear, and I’ve seen it cost a whole inventory order.

Some product types need approval even when the category itself does not. Items containing lithium batteries. Hazmat and flammables. Products making health claims. Anything with a safety certification requirement. Certain brands, through Brand Registry, regardless of category.

So the check is not “is this category gated” but “can I list this specific product, on this account, today.” The only reliable way to know is to search the product in Add a Product in Seller Central and see whether you get a normal offer form or a request-approval link.

I’d do that before ordering samples, let alone inventory.

The category decides your referral fee

This is the part with a direct cost attached, and in our experience sellers routinely get it wrong.

Referral fees vary by category, commonly 8% to 17%, with most sitting at 15%. Some categories have a minimum per-item fee. A few have tiered rates that change above a price threshold.

The practical consequence: a product that could legitimately sit in either of two categories may carry meaningfully different fees depending on which one you pick. Over a year and a few thousand units, that difference is real money.

I’d look up the current rate for every candidate category before choosing rather than after. And I would not pick a category purely on fee, for the reason in the next section.

Choosing between two plausible categories

Plenty of products genuinely fit more than one, and I’d not treat the choice as obvious. A stainless steel water bottle could be Kitchen, Sports and Outdoors, or Home.

Three things decide it, in this order.

Where do buyers actually look? Search your product’s main keyword and look at what category the top results sit in. Amazon has already worked out where the demand is, and it is telling you. Fighting that is expensive.

Which category’s filters match your product’s attributes? Buyers narrow by filters, and the filters differ per category. If your product’s distinguishing feature is a filter option in one category and not the other, that is a strong signal.

Then the referral fee. Last, not first. A lower fee in a category where nobody browses for your product is a false saving.

There is a fourth consideration that overrides all three: if one option is gated and the other is not, and you cannot get ungated, the decision is made for you.

Getting it wrong, and fixing it

Category changes on an existing listing are possible and awkward. I’ve done a number of them and none went quickly. You can request one through support, and it may take several attempts.

What I would not do is delete the listing and create a new one in the right category. That discards the reviews, the ranking history and the sales velocity the listing has accumulated, which is almost always worth more than the fee difference you were trying to correct. In our experience the temptation is strongest on a young listing with few reviews, and even then the sales history matters more than it looks.

The exception is a listing that is genuinely new with no reviews and no rank. Then starting again is cheap, and it is the one case where I’d consider it.

Worth knowing that Amazon sometimes reclassifies listings on its own, particularly during catalog cleanups, and it does not announce this. If ranking moves unexpectedly, category is one of the things to check. Our guide on diagnosing a ranking drop runs through that sequence.

The browse node layer underneath

Categories are the visible top level. Underneath sit browse nodes, which are the specific subcategory paths buyers navigate and filter through.

Browse nodes matter more than the headline category for discovery, because they are what the left-hand filter rail is built from and what “Best Seller” badges are awarded within. A badge in a precise node is achievable in a way that a badge in a top-level category is not.

Getting the node right is a matter of filling in the category-specific attributes completely. This is tedious and most sellers do it partially. I’d do it fully, including the fields that look pointless, because an unfilled attribute means your product is invisible to anyone filtering on it.

That single piece of housekeeping is one of the cheapest visibility wins available, and it costs nothing but attention.

What I check when a client asks about Amazon product categories

The question usually arrives as “which category should this go in,” and that is rarely the question that matters.

The first thing I look at is whether the listing is already in the wrong one, because a surprising number are. A product lands in a category during setup, nobody revisits it, and it has been paying an avoidable referral rate for two years. I’d check the fee schedule against the actual category before anything else, since that is the one finding that pays for itself immediately.

The second thing is the attribute completeness. Open the listing in the editor and count how many category-specific fields are empty. In our experience most listings have half of them blank, and every blank one is a filter the product cannot appear in. This is unglamorous work and it is the closest thing to free visibility available.

Third, I compare the browse node against where the top results for the main keyword actually sit. If your product is in a different node from every competitor ranking for your term, that is worth understanding rather than assuming Amazon got it wrong. Sometimes the competitors are in the better node. Occasionally you have found a less contested one, which is genuinely useful.

The last check is whether anything has changed without anyone noticing. Amazon reclassifies listings during catalog work and does not announce it. I’ve found this explains a small number of otherwise baffling ranking changes, and it takes thirty seconds to rule out.

None of that requires a tool. It requires opening the listing and reading it carefully, which is the part people skip.

A short checklist before you commit to a category

[ ] Searched the product in Add a Product and confirmed you can actually list it on this account

[ ] Checked whether the product type carries a restriction even in an open category

[ ] Looked up the referral fee for each candidate category

[ ] Checked which category the top results for your main keyword sit in

[ ] Compared the filter options buyers get in each category

[ ] Identified the specific browse node, not just the top-level category

[ ] Listed every category-specific attribute you will need to fill

If the product is gated and you cannot realistically get approved, treat that as a disqualifier rather than a hurdle. Weak competition in a gated category is weak because nobody can enter, which is a trap our guide to finding low competition products covers in detail.

FAQ

Which Amazon categories are gated?

Commonly Automotive and Powersports, Fine Art, Fine Jewelry, Watches, Collectible Coins, Grocery and Gourmet Food, Sexual Wellness, Streaming Media Players, Video and DVD, Postage Stamps, Subscription Boxes and Services. The list changes, varies by marketplace, and is applied per seller account, so check your own account rather than a published list.

How do I know if I can list a specific product?

Search for it in Add a Product in Seller Central. If you see a normal offer form you can list it; if you see a request-approval link, it is restricted for your account. This is more reliable than any category list, because restrictions also apply to individual product types and brands.

Does the Amazon category I choose affect my fees?

Yes. Referral fees vary by category, commonly 8% to 17% with most at 15%, and some categories carry minimum per-item fees or tiered rates. A product that fits two categories can pay noticeably different fees depending on which you choose.

Can I change a product’s category after listing?

Yes, through a support case, though it can take several attempts. Do not delete and relist instead, because that discards reviews, ranking history and sales velocity, which are almost always worth more than the fee difference you are correcting.

What is the difference between a category and a browse node?

The category is the visible top level. Browse nodes are the specific subcategory paths underneath, which drive the filter rail and determine which group Best Seller badges are awarded in. Nodes matter more for discovery, and you land in the right one by filling in every category-specific attribute.

Should I choose the category with the lowest referral fee?

No, that should be the last consideration. Check first where buyers actually browse for your product by looking at the category of the top search results, then which category’s filters match your attributes, and only then compare fees. A cheap fee in a category nobody browses is a false saving.

Last updated: September 12, 2026.
