\ncustomer. So no ordering from a competing marketplace, a big-box retailer, or another Amazon seller and
\nhaving the parcel arrive in their packaging with their invoice inside. That is retail arbitrage
\ndropshipping and it is a policy violation,<\/strong> regardless of how well it converts.<\/p>\n

What is allowed:<\/strong> a genuine supplier relationship where you are identified as the seller everywhere,
\nyour supplier’s identity appears nowhere, and you handle returns yourself.<\/p>\n

The last row confuses more beginners than any other.<\/strong> Sending your own inventory to Amazon and letting
\nAmazon ship it is FBA. You own the stock. That is a different business model with different economics, and
\nI’d get the vocabulary straight before reading anything else.<\/p>\n

What Amazon actually requires of you<\/h2>\n

Four obligations. All four, not three.<\/p>\n

Be the seller of record.<\/strong> On the listing, the invoice, the packing slip, and the packaging. All four, and I’d verify each individually.<\/p>\n

Remove all third-party identification.<\/strong> Your supplier’s name, logo, invoices, packing slips, and
\npromotional inserts must not reach the customer. This is the requirement suppliers break rather than
\nyou,<\/strong> which is why it has to be agreed in writing rather than assumed.<\/p>\n

Accept and process returns yourself.<\/strong> You cannot redirect the customer toward your supplier, and in our experience attempting it generates the negative feedback that damages your defect rate.<\/p>\n

Comply with every remaining seller term.<\/strong> Dropshipping constitutes no exemption from anything. The performance
\nthresholds apply identically, and I’d expect no latitude whatsoever.<\/p>\n

Why the branded-packaging rule catches honest sellers<\/h2>\n

Worth unpacking, because sellers rarely violate this deliberately and frequently violate it anyway.<\/p>\n

Your supplier has no incentive to hide themselves.<\/strong> Their packaging carries their branding because that
\nis how they normally ship, and unless you specify otherwise in the purchase agreement, they will ship the
\nway they always have. Silence gets you their packaging,<\/strong> and I’d never rely on an assumption here.<\/p>\n

Promotional inserts are the subtlest version.<\/strong> A supplier drops a catalog, a discount card, or a
\nbusiness card into the carton. Harmless in their world. In yours it identifies a third party to your
\ncustomer and breaches the policy.<\/p>\n

Return labels betray you too.<\/strong> A prepaid return label printed with somebody else’s address tells the
\ncustomer exactly who really shipped the item, and I’ve seen that surface in a customer message rather than
\nin an audit.<\/p>\n

Reused cartons carry old markings.<\/strong> A box that previously held somebody else’s product, with their
\nlabeling merely crossed out, is not unbranded packaging.<\/p>\n

Drop-shipped orders sometimes arrive with the wrong invoice entirely<\/strong>, particularly where a supplier
\nhandles many merchants and the picking is manual. In our experience this happens most during peak trading,
\nwhich is precisely when you can least afford a policy notice.<\/p>\n

What I’d do about all five.<\/strong> Specify unbranded packaging, no inserts, and your invoice explicitly in the
\npurchase agreement, request a photograph of a genuinely packed parcel before listing, and then order from
\nyour own listing quarterly to confirm nothing has quietly changed. Three steps, and the third is the only
\none that catches drift.<\/p>\n

The metrics you have to hold<\/h2>\n

This is where dropshipping fails operationally rather than legally.<\/p>\n

Order defect rate beneath 1%.<\/strong> Aggregating negative feedback, A-to-z claims, and chargebacks into one figure.<\/p>\n

Late shipment rate under 4%.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pre-fulfillment cancellation rate under 2.5%.<\/strong> This is the one dropshipping breaks,<\/strong> because a
\ncancellation happens when your supplier turns out not to have the stock you already sold. You cannot cancel
\nyour way out of a stockout without the metric recording it.<\/p>\n

Valid tracking rate high.<\/strong> Your supplier must furnish tracking promptly, in a format Amazon recognizes,
\nwithout exception. Every order, and I’d measure their reliability before scaling.<\/p>\n

Read those four together and the real problem appears:<\/strong> you are accountable for performance you do not
\ncontrol. In our experience that gap, rather than the policy, is what ends most dropshipping attempts. I’d
\ntreat supplier reliability as the entire business rather than a detail of it.<\/p>\n

The economics, honestly<\/h2>\n

Because the appeal is no inventory investment, and the cost of that appeal is thin margin.<\/p>\n

You buy at wholesale and sell at retail, and the spread absorbs everything.<\/strong> The referral fee, the
\nadvertising, the returns, the cancellations, and your time.<\/p>\n

Referral fees apply to the total sales price<\/strong> including shipping you charge, which sellers modeling on

You compete against merchants holding inventory<\/strong> who consequently price lower, dispatch faster, and capture
\nthe Buy Box. A structural disadvantage rather than an execution failing, and in my experience no amount of diligence overcomes it.<\/p>\n

Advertising rarely rescues thin margin.<\/strong> Break-even cost per click is margin per unit times conversion

Where it can work:<\/strong> genuinely exclusive supply, a category with unusual margin, bulky items where
\nholding inventory is expensive for everybody, or as a way to test demand before committing capital. That
\nlast use is the one I’d actually recommend,<\/strong> and it is a temporary state rather than a business.<\/p>\n

What to agree with a supplier before listing anything<\/h2>\n

Seven points, in writing, not in an email thread.<\/p>\n

Unbranded packaging with no inserts.<\/strong> Specify it, and ask for a photograph of a packed parcel.<\/p>\n

Your invoice or no invoice.<\/strong> Never theirs.<\/p>\n

Tracking supplied within a stated timeframe<\/strong>, in a carrier format Amazon accepts.<\/p>\n

Real-time stock visibility<\/strong>, or a committed buffer they hold for you. Without this your cancellation
\nrate is a matter of luck.<\/p>\n

Who pays for returns<\/strong>, and where returned units physically go.<\/p>\n

What happens on a stockout.<\/strong> Specifically. This is the clause that protects your account.<\/p>\n

Whether they also sell on Amazon themselves,<\/strong> because if they do, you are competing with your own
\nsupplier on price.<\/p>\n

I’d treat a supplier unwilling to commit to the first four as unsuitable rather than as a negotiation.<\/p>\n

How to start without risking the account<\/h2>\n

  1. Read Amazon’s dropshipping policy directly<\/strong>, not a summary. Ten minutes.<\/li>\n
  2. Pick a supplier who will agree the seven points above<\/strong> in writing.<\/li>\n
  3. Start with a handful of products<\/strong>, not a catalog. Cancellations scale faster than revenue.<\/li>\n
  4. Test the fulfillment chain with your own order.<\/strong> Buy from your own listing and inspect what arrives.
    \n This single step catches the supplier-branding problem before a customer does,<\/strong> and I’d never skip
    \n it.<\/li>\n
  5. Watch cancellation rate weekly<\/strong>, not monthly. It moves fast and it reaches account health.<\/li>\n
  6. Model the margin after all fees<\/strong> before scaling anything.<\/li>\n
  7. Have a plan for what happens when it works.<\/strong> Usually that plan is holding inventory, because the

    Where dropshipping goes wrong<\/h2>\n

    Supplier ships branded packaging.<\/strong> Immediate policy exposure, and the customer tells Amazon.<\/p>\n
