It is free, it
is granted per brand and per category, and most applications that fail do so for the same reason: the
images do not show the brand name physically on the product or its packaging.

That is the whole test in practice. Amazon needs to see that the brand you claim exists on the item
itself. A logo added to a photograph, a mockup, or a label that looks applied in software gets declined.

Before applying, one thing worth checking: a GS1 barcode may be cheaper and faster than you think, and
in some situations it is the better answer. The comparison is below rather than buried at the end.

Who qualifies

Five situations, and one of them has to describe you. I’d check this before anything else, because the application form does not tell you that you were never eligible.

Your own brand with no barcodes. The commonest case. You manufacture or private-label and never bought
GTINs.

Unbranded or generic products. No brand exists to barcode.

Product parts and components without their own manufacturer barcode.

Bundles you created, though the cleaner route for bundles is usually a real barcode. Our guide to
creating a bundle listing covers why.

Certain categories where Amazon does not require a GTIN at all. Check before applying, since you may
not need an exemption in the first place.

You do not qualify if you are reselling a branded product that already has a barcode. In that case you
list on the existing ASIN.

What Amazon actually wants to see

The part that decides the outcome, so I’d read this section twice.

Images of the product with the brand name visible on it, or on its packaging, or on a label attached
to it. Two to nine images, showing all sides.

Photographs, not renders. A real photograph of a real item, and I’d not try to be clever about this. In our experience mockups are the single
most common rejection cause, followed immediately by logos that were obviously placed digitally.

The brand name spelled identically to the brand you enter in the application. A mismatch in capitalization or spacing will fail, and in our experience that trips up more applications than it should.

For unbranded products, images showing the product has no brand marking anywhere.

A letter of authorization if you are applying on behalf of a brand you do not own.

Two practical notes. Photograph the product before it ships, if you can, because getting images
retrospectively from a factory is slower than doing it once. And include a shot of the packaging label
clearly, since that is frequently where the brand appears most legibly.

Photographing for approval

Since images decide the outcome, it is worth treating this as the actual task rather than an afterthought.

Plain background, even light, product in focus. Not artistic, and I’d resist any instinct otherwise. Amazon is verifying a fact, not judging
composition, and a clean documentary shot beats a styled one every time.

Get the brand name sharp and legible, which in our experience is where most weak submissions fall down. If it is embossed, molded, or printed small, take a close-up
specifically of that. A reviewer who cannot read the brand will decline rather than squint.

Shoot every side, including the base, because brand marks frequently live somewhere unglamorous. When I have gone looking, the base was where the mark was.

Include the packaging separately if the brand appears there, and include the product with packaging in
one frame so the connection between them is visible.

Avoid anything that looks digital. No added text, no drop shadows, no white cut-out that could pass for
a render. In our experience the moment an image looks like it came out of design software, the application
is in trouble regardless of whether the product is genuine.

For unbranded goods, prove the absence. Photograph every surface to show there is no marking anywhere,
which is a harder brief than it sounds and worth doing carefully.

I’d budget 20 minutes and a phone. When I have seen applications approved on the second attempt, better
photographs were the only change.

The steps

Search Seller Central Help for “GTIN exemption” and open the application. The path moves as
Seller Central is reorganized, so search rather than following a bookmark.

Select the product category. Exemptions are granted per category, so a brand approved in one is not
automatically approved in another.

Enter the brand name exactly as it appears on the product, or select generic or unbranded.

Upload the images. All sides, brand clearly visible, real photographs.

Add the letter of authorization if applying for somebody else’s brand.

Submit and wait. Amazon states a turnaround at submission; clean applications clear faster than
incomplete ones.

List using the exemption, which then appears as an option where the barcode field would be.

Why applications fail

Five causes, and four of them are avoidable in ten minutes.

Mockups or renders instead of photographs. The most common. By a distance.

Brand not visible on the product. A branded box with an unbranded item inside frequently fails, which surprises sellers who assumed the packaging was enough, and in our experience it is the second most common cause after mockups.

Brand name mismatch between the application and the images.

Wrong category selected, so the exemption is granted for something you are not listing. Easy to do and easy to miss.

Applying as a reseller for a product that already has a barcode, which is not what the exemption is
for.

I’d photograph the physical product on a plain background, with the label in focus, before starting the
form. When I have seen these rejected repeatedly, it was the same weak image set resubmitted rather than
a genuine eligibility problem.

GTIN exemption or a GS1 barcode?

Worth a proper comparison, because the exemption is not automatically the better choice.

GS1 pricing is public and tiered, and cheaper at the low end than sellers assume. GS1 offers a
single-barcode purchase for one-off needs alongside company prefixes for multiple products, and the
company prefix carries an initial fee plus an annual renewal. An earlier version of this page stated
“$250+ per year”, which conflated the initial fee with the annual renewal and ignored the single-barcode
route entirely. Check GS1’s own current pricing for your country rather than any figure published in an
article, including this one.

The exemption is free. It takes an application and a wait, and nothing else.

Where the barcode is genuinely better:

You plan to sell beyond Amazon. Retail, other marketplaces, and distributors expect real GTINs, and
an Amazon exemption is worthless everywhere else.

You want portability. A GS1 barcode belongs to you and is recognized universally.

You have many products. A company prefix issues many GTINs at once, where exemptions are applied for
per brand and category.

You want to avoid a dependency on an approval that Amazon could interpret differently later.

Where the exemption is better:

Amazon-only, small catalog, testing a product. No reason to pay for portability you will not use.

Genuinely unbranded goods, where there is no brand to register a barcode against.

Cash is tight. The catalog is small.

I’d buy real barcodes for anything I intended to build a brand around, and use the exemption for testing.
In our experience the sellers who regret the exemption are the ones who succeeded and then needed GTINs
for a retail conversation.

After you have it

Three things worth knowing so it does not surprise you later.

It is per brand and per category. Expanding into a new category means applying again, and I’d factor that into any expansion plan rather than discovering it mid-launch.

It can be reviewed. An exemption is a permission rather than a property right. Amazon can revisit it, particularly if a brand dispute arises, and in my experience that possibility is worth weighing against the cost of real barcodes.

It does not create brand protection. An exemption is not Brand Registry and gives you none of its tools, which I’d say is the most common misunderstanding about it. If protecting the brand matters, our guide to
Amazon Brand Registry covers the route that does, and it
requires a registered trademark rather than photographs.

FAQ

What is an Amazon GTIN exemption?

Permission to list a product without a UPC, EAN, or other barcode. It is free, granted per brand and per
category, and requires images showing the brand name physically on the product or its packaging.

Who qualifies for a GTIN exemption?

Sellers with their own brand and no barcodes, unbranded or generic products, parts and components without
manufacturer barcodes, self-created bundles, and certain categories where Amazon does not require a GTIN.
Resellers of already-barcoded branded products do not qualify.

Why was my GTIN exemption rejected?

Almost always the images. Mockups or renders instead of real photographs, the brand not visible on the
product itself, a brand name that does not match the application exactly, the wrong category selected, or
applying as a reseller for a product that already has a barcode.

Is a GTIN exemption better than buying a GS1 barcode?

It depends on your plans. The exemption is free and Amazon-only. A GS1 barcode belongs to you, is
recognized by retailers and other marketplaces, and covers many products through a company prefix. For a
brand you intend to build, real barcodes are usually worth it.

How much does a GS1 barcode cost?

GS1 pricing is public, tiered, and varies by country, with a single-barcode option for one-off needs and
company prefixes carrying an initial fee plus annual renewal. Check GS1’s current pricing for your
country rather than any figure quoted in an article.

Does a GTIN exemption give me brand protection?

No. An exemption is permission to list without a barcode and nothing more. Brand protection comes from
Amazon Brand Registry, which requires a registered trademark rather than photographs.

Last updated: August 31, 2026. Amazon’s GTIN exemption process, eligible categories, and Seller Central
menu paths change over time, as does GS1 pricing. An earlier version of this page stated GS1 costs as
“$250+ per year”, which conflated the initial fee with annual renewal; that figure has been removed.
Check Seller Central and GS1 directly for current terms.

How to apply for an Amazon GTIN exemption: who
