Amazon FBA United Kingdom: Fees, VAT and Cross-Border Rules

Table of Contents

Selling through Amazon FBA United Kingdom fulfillment works much like FBA anywhere: you send stock to Amazon’s UK warehouses and Amazon picks, packs and ships to customers on amazon.co.uk. The UK-specific parts are the paperwork. Overseas sellers storing goods in the UK face VAT rules with no registration threshold, you need an EORI number to import, products need CE or UKCA marking where applicable, and since Brexit the UK sits outside Pan-European FBA, though Amazon still offers cross-border fulfillment between the UK and EU.

I’ll cover fees, VAT, importing, product marking, and how UK and EU fulfillment connect. Paperwork first. Then stock.

Amazon FBA United Kingdom fees

From Amazon’s UK pricing page:

Fee Amount
Professional plan £25 (excl. VAT) per month plus selling fees
Individual plan £0.75 (excl. VAT) per item sold
Referral fees Most between 8% and 15%, by category
FBA fulfillment A flat fee per unit based on product type, dimensions and weight

US sellers can link accounts through Amazon Global Selling. Once linked, Amazon says the combined monthly fee is the equivalent of USD 39.99 or the sum of the plan fees, whichever is lower.

VAT: the rule overseas sellers miss

  • No threshold for overseas businesses. UK guidance says you must register for VAT, regardless of turnover, if your business is based outside the UK and you supply goods to the UK. The usual threshold (£90,000) doesn’t help you.
  • Marketplace rules since January 1, 2021. For goods located in the UK at the point of sale and sold by an overseas business through an online marketplace, the marketplace is liable for the VAT. The overseas seller makes a zero-rated “deemed supply” to the marketplace.
  • Register or apply for exemption. HMRC lets such sellers either register for VAT or apply for exemption from registration.
  • Selling directly (outside a marketplace) with goods in the UK means you must register and account for VAT.

In my view, VAT is the step to get professional advice on before you ship. The rules depend on how and where you sell, and mistakes are expensive to unwind.

Importing: EORI number

To move goods into Great Britain you generally need an EORI number. If your business isn’t eligible for one, UK guidance says you need to appoint someone to deal with customs for you. Many sellers use a freight forwarder or customs broker; our guide to a freight forwarder for Amazon FBA covers what to ask.

CE vs UKCA marking

The UK government has said CE marking will be recognized indefinitely for a range of product regulations, including most of those owned by the Department for Business and Trade. Some sectors are excluded, such as medical devices, construction products and marine equipment. UKCA marking remains available. Check the regulation that covers your product before relying on CE alone.

UK and EU fulfillment after Brexit

  • Pan-European FBA excludes the UK. It covers Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Belgium and Ireland.
  • Remote Fulfilment with FBA. Amazon reopened cross-border fulfillment between the UK and EU, now called Remote Fulfilment with FBA. You can store stock in the UK to fulfill EU orders, or in the EU for UK orders, with cross-border fees. Amazon says this works without sending inventory to the destination store or getting a VAT number there, though check current terms before relying on it.

When you plan Europe and the UK together, our guide to the Amazon European Fulfillment Network explains the EU side, and our UK product research checklist helps you pick products for the market.

Common mistakes I’d avoid

  • Shipping before VAT is sorted. Stock in a UK warehouse can create VAT obligations from day one.
  • Copying US listings word for word. UK buyers expect British spelling, metric or imperial as the category demands, and UK plug types where relevant.
  • Ignoring returns. Check the UK return rules that apply to your category, and build returns into your margin.
  • Pricing in your head in dollars. Fees, VAT and shipping change the math. Run UK numbers in pounds.
  • Forgetting the EU link. If you also sell in Europe, decide early whether UK stock will serve EU orders through Remote Fulfilment, or the other way round.

A UK launch checklist

  1. Confirm product compliance and marking (CE or UKCA).
  2. Get an EORI number, or appoint a customs agent.
  3. Sort VAT: registration or exemption, with an adviser.
  4. Open or link your amazon.co.uk account.
  5. Prepare listings in British English, with UK sizing and units.
  6. Ship to UK fulfillment centers through a forwarder.
  7. Launch with Sponsored Products and track UK-specific margins.

Honestly, in my view the UK is a strong second market for many US brands. Same language, high Amazon usage, and a fulfillment link into the EU.
