Private label handbags manufacturers make bags to your design or from their own styles, with your brand on the hardware, lining and label. A New York workshop publishes minimums of 24 pieces per style; Chinese factories start around 100 pieces and often prefer 500. The rule most new bag brands miss is about materials: under the FTC’s leather guides, you can’t call a bag “leather” unless it’s leather in all substantial parts, and imitation or bonded leather must be disclosed.
I’ll compare manufacturers, explain the leather rules, then cover samples, origin labeling and Amazon.
Private label handbags manufacturers and minimums
From each company’s own site, checked in October 2026:
| Manufacturer | Location | Published minimum | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baikal | New York City | 24 pieces per style | In-house NYC production; exotic and combination bags case by case |
| Enviro-Tote | New Hampshire | 50 bags per design (canvas totes) | Custom sizes from 100 pieces |
| HYD Handbags | Guangzhou, China | Selected products from 100 pieces per style | Private label offered |
| Szoneier | China | From 100 pieces; FAQ says usually 500 | OEM and ODM |
My take: a US workshop costs more per bag but lets you test a style at 24 pieces and visit the floor. Overseas factories suit a proven style at volume. Don’t place a 500-piece order on an untested design.
The leather rules: what you can call your bag
The FTC’s Guides for Select Leather and Imitation Leather Products cover handbags, shoulder bags, purses and similar items. The key points:
- “Leather” unqualified is only fair when the product is leather in all substantial parts.
- Imitation materials must be disclosed. If a material looks like leather but isn’t, its non-leather nature should be disclosed, with terms such as “Not leather”, “Imitation leather”, “Simulated leather”, “Vinyl” or “Plastic”.
- Bonded leather shouldn’t be represented as leather unless its composition is disclosed, for example “Bonded Leather Containing 60% Leather Fibers and 40% Non-leather Substances.”
“Vegan leather”? The FTC guides don’t define the term. A bag that looks like leather but isn’t still needs its real material disclosed under the guides, so I’d write “vegan leather (polyurethane)” or similar, and never let the listing imply real leather.
Do bags need a fiber content label?
Usually not. The Textile Fiber Products Identification Act exempts textile fiber products incorporated in handbags and luggage, and the FTC’s labeling guide confirms that textiles used in handbags don’t need a textile label. Imported bags still need country of origin marking: US customs law requires imported articles to be marked legibly and permanently with their origin.
US workshop or overseas factory? A quick decision
| Your situation | My pick |
|---|---|
| Testing a first style or two | US workshop with a low minimum |
| Real leather, premium price point | US or specialist leather workshop |
| Canvas totes or simple shapes | Domestic tote maker |
| Proven style, need margin at volume | Overseas factory |
| Many colorways of one style | Overseas factory, after a domestic test |
When you move a proven style overseas, send your golden sample and spec sheet, and pay for a pre-shipment inspection on the first order. Small savings per bag disappear fast if a container arrives with weak straps.
What to check in samples
- Stitching density and edges. Loose threads and raw edges show up in close-up photos.
- Hardware: zips, clasps and feet. Ask what metal and plating they use.
- Lining and interior pockets.
- Strap attachment strength. Load the bag and lift it by the strap a few dozen times.
- Material proof: a spec sheet stating exactly what the outer material is. You’ll need it for your listing.
When you approve a sample, keep it as the “golden sample” for comparing production. Honestly, that one habit prevents most quality disputes.
Selling handbags on Amazon
- Material accuracy. The material field, title and images must match the spec sheet. “Leather” in a title on a PU bag invites returns and complaints.
- Measurements. Give exact dimensions and strap drop; show the bag on a person for scale.
- Images. Interior shots and hardware close-ups reduce questions.

FAQ
What is the minimum order for private label handbags?
Published minimums include 24 pieces per style at a New York workshop, 50 per design for canvas totes, and 100 to 500 pieces at Chinese factories.
Can I call my bag leather?
Only if it is leather in all substantial parts, under the FTC’s leather guides. Imitation materials must be disclosed.
Is “vegan leather” a legal term?
The FTC guides don’t define it. Disclose the actual material, such as polyurethane, and don’t imply real leather.
Do handbags need a fiber content label?
No. Textiles used in handbags are exempt from the Textile Act’s labeling rules, but imported bags need country of origin marking.
What is bonded leather?
Material made from leather fibers bonded with other substances. Under the FTC guides, it shouldn’t be called leather without disclosing its composition.
US or overseas handbag manufacturer?
US workshops suit small test runs and close quality control; overseas factories suit proven styles at higher volume.
